Dielle Diesco I feel a strong necessity to speak to you...to apologize to you...to say what so few of your elders have the courage to say...that there are just so many ways that we have failed you. This is a confession. It is the only atonement I can offer, the world such as it is. I'm not asking for your forgiveness or understanding. Frankly, it is impossible to understand. We, the generations of supposed grown-ups who should have known better, should have made you our priority, should have thought about you and not ourselves, should have paved the way to better your lives, we have led and followed with carelessness, greed, corruption, and neglect. Whether we actively engineered the self-destruction or sat idly by while the powerful and supposedly knowledgeable few unwittingly masterminded your demise, the fact remains, we have failed...immensely, immeasurably, irreparably. There is little we can do. The genie cannot be stuffed back into the bottle. We have unleashed so many wrongs. We blatantly ignored signs of climate distress. We introduced GMO's into the food chain. We allowed corporate interests to take precedence over not just common sense, but over your interests. We let it all happen. Now we have sickened and genetically damaged your generations. We have threatened the very basic necessities for survival in an unnatural quest for power and control and money. We have not only tainted but sadly destroyed much of what was given to us with such generosity by the Mystery of Life. We have poisoned our environment, and in our laziness and desires to cut corners, we have destroyed the earth you were to inherit. We behaved as a cancer rather than as stewards. Fukushima, oil spills, fracking, pesticides...our failures are too numerous to count and all too easily denied. Yet each and every one is all too easily traced back to the root of greed, entitlement and laziness. We got it wrong. We valued the wrong things. We kept quiet when we should have roared and roared when we should have taped our mouths shut. We funded wars and proudly sent you off to fight them without so much as an ounce of truth behind their reasons. We made you killers when you were born to be lovers and creators. We shunned the homeless, mentally ill, and those culturally and religiously different than ourselves and held all sickness at arm's length, as if each incident wasn't a mirror reflecting the sickness inside. Sickness became a commodity traded on the pharmaceutical exchange. Some of us even hid cures and destroyed evidence that may have eradicated much of the miseries of illness. So many tragedies have befallen us as a result...tragedies that could have so easily been avoided had we been paying better attention. We could have been creating a better world, a brighter world. We could have created something immensely beautiful with what we were given. Instead, we either set out to conquer and destroy everything in our path or sat by watching the destruction, whether idly or doing our best in some small way to change things, allowing the insidious corruption of our ideals. It was never enough and never could be. We'd long since passed the tipping point. We were sleeping, drugged and deluded. We are drugged and deluded still. Learn from us, if you can. For if there is anything I can give you, any reparation to be made, it is seed of knowing that you needn't continue as we have. You can change it all. You can shift the priority back to the heart, to the people, to learning to care for yourselves, each other, all the creatures of the earth, and the very earth itself. You can abolish the self-hatred, greed and corruption that has thrown off the balance of the people of this earth. You can vote the lunatics out, completely overhaul corrupt governments, erase the stupidity and short-sightedness with new laws, with protective acts. You can end small-minded and bigoted thinking. You can redistribute what has been stolen in the name of commerce, consumerism, and commercialism. You can restore balance. Make no mistake. We raised you to fear. So it will take a great deal of courage. It will take profound sacrifice. And it will take a letting go of the absolute detestation you have every right to feel toward us, your parents, your governments, your teachers, your caretakers...a detestation we have trained you into feeling for yourselves. Move beyond us, above us, light-years ahead of us. Do it. Take the reins. It isn't too late yet. But it will be soon. May future generations be blessed with beauty, truth, health, abundance, love, compassion, peace, and light. This is your true inheritance. This is your birthright. Yes, we have failed you miserably.
