CHAPTER ONE
Faith McKinnon sat by her living room window with her morning cup of coffee, waiting for her daughter, Katy Cassidy, to arrive. She was dropping off her ten year old son, Brendan, to begin his spiritual training with Faith. In the beginning, Katy had resisted the training, arguing that kids should be kids and Brendan shouldn’t be subjected to things that he couldn’t possibly understand. But when Brendan’s nightmares began, she realized the only relief he would find was in learning how to spiritually protect himself. Faith thought about the afternoon of her engagement to Greer, seven years earlier. It was a happy occasion, tarnished only by her discovery that her guardian angel, Raf, had made contact with Brendan. In turn, Faith was forced to explain her spiritual work to Katy. Passing on Raf’s explanation of the promise their ancestors had made committing their bloodline to forever be light workers. Katy knew immediately what Faith was talking about. She had never told her mother, but she had also undergone the spiritual testing. Listening to Faith, it all made sense to her now. At the time, she believed it to be nightmares and images conjured from her imagination after watching a horror movie or perhaps from eating certain foods before going to bed. Now, she was mortified upon finding out that the nightmares were real situations that she was placed into working for the light. She didn’t fully believe it until Faith spoke to her about saving Jerry Norgaard, the son of one of her mother’s best friends, Darlene. Darlene was trapped in a loveless, abusive marriage which almost cost the lives of everyone she loved. Her cruel and controlling husband, Henrik, had been furious when Jerry escaped his punishment for interfering while ~ 1 ~ he was trying to teach Darlene a lesson. Jerry had no choice but to leave his mother behind. He fled to Faith’s house, where she and her husband Jack raised him through the last few years of high school. Henrik would never forgive Faith for stepping in to help Jerry. He wanted his son to come crawling back to him, and when that didn’t happen, he vowed he would make Faith pay for her meddling. She would be the first on his kill list to die. The night he attempted to murder her ended badly for him, resulting in his death instead. Had it not been for working with Raf, Faith might not be alive now. She thought back to that evening, when she sat on the edge of Katy’s bed, trying to make her understand what Brendan would be facing. “Katy, why do you think you and Darlene, both, had dreams… feelings… that Jerry had died? It’s because he did die. He was on the other side and I was sent to bring him back to this world. But, I couldn’t do it without you. Don’t you remember how we found each other in that long hallway? How you knew what room in that building he was in? How the people there were trying to steal our energy? It was real Katy. You and I… we were there.” Katy looked at Faith in disbelief. How was she ever going to be able to protect her son? She didn’t want him to go through the same nightmares she had in the past. She didn’t want him to be tested at all. This couldn’t be his destiny. She couldn’t – wouldn’t – accept it. So, she thought, he’s a healer – let him be a doctor or a veterinarian like Greer. Faith took Katy by the hand and gently said, “Dear, there’s nothing you or I can do. It is fated – sealed by our bloodline. The best we can hope for is to help make him aware of his spiritual self. Therein lies his strength against the darkness.” “Mom, you’re scaring me,” Katy responded, pulling her hand away and abruptly standing up. “It’s like you’re a different person when you talk about this. You don’t even sound like yourself.” ~ 2 ~ “Really? How so?” Faith asked. “Like that!” Katy retorted. “You would normally say ‘how come,’ but when you’re talking now you sound like a different person. So… so old, ancient.” Faith knew what Katy meant. She felt like the words were being spoken by someone else. Like they were being channeled. Perhaps that is what it was – channeling. She silently implored the spirit to stop trying to help her. She noticed a subtle shift in her energy and felt slightly more focused. Must have been true, she mused. So I can channel now? Great. One more thing for me to figure out. “Okay, I get what you’re saying, Katy, but you need to understand what I’m saying now. There is nothing that’s going to stop his training. We both know what that means. I’m begging you to please think about Brendan. Let me help him until he is old enough to decide whether or not he will want do this work.” Katy huffed, “Work. Work? Whatever. Okay, I’ll agree to this much. I’ll watch over Brendan. If I see any type of ‘training’ going on, I will start bringing him over for lessons. Agreed?” She emphasized the word training with quotation marks in the air. Faith nodded. She stood up and hugged her daughter. “Somehow, I know everything will be all right,” she whispered in Katy’s ear, giving her a kiss on the cheek. “Come on, let’s rejoin the others.” Seven peaceful years have passed since that day, with Faith hardly being called upon by Raf – until now. She and Greer had relocated close to Paso Robles to be near Brendan in anticipation of the day she knew was inevitably coming. She was grateful that Greer understood the importance of her work and was agreeable to the move. A smile crossed her lips, as she recalled his words, “I’m all in, honey. Wherever you need to go is where I need to be. We’ll make it work.” If it was possible to love him more than she already did, it was at that moment. A quick beep of a car horn bought Faith back to the present. She glanced out the window to see Brendan and Katy closing their car doors, and heading toward her front entrance. She set her coffee cup on the living room table and stood up. She readjusted her top and made her way to the door, wondering what this summer’s teaching would bring.
