I am in the Himalayas. The picture before me is so serene, a skyline of snow-capped mountains in all directions, misty clouds kissing the hills, streams in their vertical falls unable to control their merge into the distant gobbling waters of the river, snaking through the green cover of the valley, in its hurtling descent.
None of the elements are making any demands of attention, or of desire fulfillment, or invoking any reaction from my consciousness. Their existence provokes quietness and causes no fissures, fragmentation or dissonance within me.
My mind thinks the scene is so beautiful. Actually, it's my inner beauty that has got a chance to pervade my consciousness, with its Silence.
I am back in Mumbai. The uneven incongruous sights, the unpleasant mix of acrid smells, arrhythmic beats of omnifarious sounds, invade all my senses as I touch down. As I add myself to torrents of people and crowds, my mind becomes busy dodging the bombast of thoughts, intentions, ambitions, fear, reactions, aggressive and passive aggressive pursuits of purposeful minds.
My mind first attempts to build up walls. I have resolved to keep my inner silence pervading my existence. But it loses the battle, and becomes reactive to the stimuli all around. The noise within me begins to arise and then levels up to the noise outside me. Oh my resolve! Oh damn this city! I have now joined the torrent, outside and inside.
Everything 'acts' out of desire, greed and fear, it is so natural. Even a bird a or a dog acting out of fear, greed or desire, triggers a reaction of the same in the other; it's viral. I am also susceptible to the same virality around me. I am easily affected.
Oh, but where does this virality come from? Can I become insensitive? So long as fear and greed lie within me, dormant or not, they will be active to the stimuli hitting me. If they weren’t present in me, would I be affected?
Can I be without fear and desire? When that happens, there would be no difference between being in a city, or in the Himalayas.
