In the I Ching or Book of Changes hexagram The Creative represents heaven, the source of eternal light and all creative power.
When the winter solstice is over and the days slowly grow longer, the creative force gains in energy and power with the return of the light. The time of The Creative is ushered in, reaching a peak during the summer solstice. In the world of nature we can see the creative force at work when new green shoots push up out of the ground and the trees are slowly turning green with new leaves. At the height of The Creative the trees are in full leaf, the crops are fast ripening and there is an abundance of flowers. For the individual this is a very significant time, because The Creative also represents the creative energy of the individual. This is the time to undertake something of importance. The time of The Creative is a window of opportunity for the individual to ride on the wave of the creative power. In January and February the creative force is at the beginning of an inevitable and rapid increase in energy. This greatly effects the individual. It is the perfect time to consult the I Ching oracle to find out if one’s carefully hatched plans can succeed in the reality. When the I Ching advises the individual to go ahead with his/her plan, it will surely succeed. If the I Ching makes clear that the plan is unrealistic and will fail, the individual can consider an alternative and consult the I Ching oracle again. One thing is certain, the time of The Creative is a golden period in which a major breakthrough can be achieved. To illustrate how “riding on the wave of the creative power” has worked for us, here is an example from one of our I Ching consultations. We were living in a place that was becoming increasingly undesirable, because we could see no future there. We felt an urgent need to leave, but thus far our plans for moving on were proving to be unrealistic and unattainable. However, time was marching on, it was already the end of March, and we were still empty handed. We decided to ask the I Ching if we would succeed in finding a way to move on. We received the third line in hexagram 32 Duration. This line develops into hexagram 40 Deliverance. The third line in hexagram 32 advised us to stay on course and continue working on finding a way to leave the situation. Hexagram Deliverance told us we would succeed in breaking free of the situation, but only by following the path of least resistance. Eventually, a realistic opportunity would present itself as the solution for our problem. It worked. In June, on the day of the summer solstice, we found somewhere to move to and in the following weeks made the necessary arrangements. In the first week of August we completed the move and settled into our new home. Moving into our new home coincided completely with the peak of The Creative. In 2020 we completed a book about the I Ching oracle, titled The I Ching Oracle – a guide through the human maze. In this book we describe the hexagrams and the moving lines through the lens of our own real life experiences. We also explain how the oracle works and why it gives valid results. The book aims to be a hands-on manual for using the oracle whenever the reader has an important question to ask.
