David Essel, M.S.,O.M When we think of the people in this world that exhibit a sense of calmness, many times we think that they are extra ordinary in nature… Or like a guru… Some may say that they’re like someone from a different planet!
Why? Because most of us live in a constant state of low anxiety… Uncertainty… Doubt… Frustration… Stress… Irritability… And we can change this, if we want to. Now change doesn’t mean it’s always going to be easy, but the steps below are incredibly simple ways to start to decrease stress and increase your level of calmness every day. For the past 40+ years, I have been blessed to work with people from all over the world as a counselor, minister and best selling author, helping them to access a calmer life, that they may not have known had existed until we began our work together. From the single mom struggling to make ends meet, to one of my clients, a high-powered multi millionaire executive who cannot seem to keep his relationship with his wife of 10 years in a good space. Both of these people live in quite a bit of stress which is why they reached out for help in the first place. And then another client that is struggling to stay sober… And another one battling ongoing daily anxiety… And one more who’s trying to find a new career in life during these turbulent times. And maybe you’re also struggling to try to live a more peaceful life, and just cannot seem to wrap your head around the steps to take to make this happen. Let’s look at the 6 powerful steps below in order to live a life filled with a greater degree of calmness: Number one. Walk instead of argue. When you’re with a partner, a child, or even a coworker where you seem to go into negative conversations, learn to end them quickly and take a 15 or 20 minute walk before you continue carrying on a conversation that is going down the tubes. Number two. Sit in nature every day for a minimal of 15 to 20 minutes. It doesn’t matter if you live in New York City, Los Angeles, or Utica New York… There’s nature all around us and if it takes you a few minutes to find that peaceful park, or that gentle stream… Do it every day. Number three. Do not turn on any electronics for the first 60 minutes that you are awake every day. Social media, the news, even the weather reports can start to increase the release of adrenaline, which can increase anxiety and stress the exact opposite of what we’re looking for. Use the first hour every day to meditate, journal, walk, work out, paint, sing, read inspirational books or spiritual textbooks… Start your day off in peace. Number four. Get help starting today for any addiction you may be struggling with. Addictions to food, nicotine, alcohol, video games, social media all create anxiety, and in many cases shame and guilt. If you have any kind of addiction or dependency, get help today, your mind and body will love you for it. Number five. Meditate, or follow a guided visualization program even if just for five minutes every day. This will allow your mind to calm down, thoughts to arise and to release… Leading to a greater sense of peace. Number six. Visit an animal shelter. Sign up as a volunteer. Give your time to help creatures that need your love so deeply as a way to increase your own inner peace and calmness right now. As you can imagine, the list goes on and on and on, but if you just start with one of the steps above, you automatically bring a greater sense of calmness into your life. As someone who struggled for 30 years with Addiction, I have to admit that by doing what I’ve written above, it has had a dramatic impact on my own life as well as thousands of clients that I’ve worked with over the past 40 years.
