The Gift of Life Lessons As a child of nine, I pretty much had the monopoly among my friends on how to deal with death. My dad had died in a plane accident at the prime of his life and his loss changed my life forever. I watched as my mom struggled to carry on alone, putting on a brave face and trying to keep positive in the depths of despair. Her strength taught me to look on the bright side and my positive conviction was challenged once again when she died six years later of breast cancer (and probably a broken heart). At 16, I was at an age when I was really trying to figure out life. Along with all the normal adolescent questions, I tried to understand the deeper dynamics of life. I knew without question that if you keep a positive attitude, life will triumph in the face of grief and loss. Life challenges us all but for those of us who really believe in positive intention; we know that it’s easier to get through the bumps. I know first-hand, that it works and began to study the quantum physics of the power of a wish. Science can prove that we are magnetic beings and thought has mass. Why couldn’t our thoughts attract the manifestation of our wishes? I set out to write a novel for kids who are on the brink of becoming adults to offer life lessons and inspire them to listen to their gut instincts and believe in themselves. The story is about the power of wishes in creating your best life. It raises issues of self-confidence, choice and consequence and offers a ride into a parallel universe where beauty and perfection ignite the senses. Emotions run from the frailty of young love to the depths of grief and the reader may be surprised at what comes from the strength of humility and the power of forgiveness. Sophisticated life lessons of self-worth are presented in “Gifts of the Crysnix” and will resonate with any age. Is it the story of my life? No, but my hard-earned education of life, loss and moving on to create your best life is reflected. To set the scene, the princess is reciting the laws that govern the realm of the Crysnix at a coming-of-age ceremony called the Volare Solus. Princess Amethyst took the podium and cleared her throat. She looked out at the smiling faces of so many Crysnix and animals whom she loved dearly. Although she had gone through the ceremony before, she was so grateful that this was a happier time. “We all know where our powers come from,” she began. “The Laws of Light remind us to live our best lives and allow us to tap into the power of the universe. Aderra has been a wonderful teacher, preparing us for this day. The interesting thing is, I think the Laws can be interpreted in many ways, which is one of the things that make them so perfect.” Her friends became her audience, and they settled comfortably as they listened. “The first law, ‘know thyself,’ is the hardest to really understand. In order to finally ‘get it,’ I had to accept myself, be open to the flow, and in turn, love myself. That was really hard because I was concentrating on all the wrong things—the kinds of things that inhibit the flow of power, not enable it. I have Marsuveus to thank for figuratively kicking my royal butt and getting me on the right track.” The crowd laughed at her out-of-character crassness and took the joke as intended, while the king and queen glanced at each other. The princess went on. “The second law, ‘be a vessel of harmony,’ came easily once I opened my heart to the power. I now feel like a channel of love, and it makes me very happy. I have Patter to thank for that. She is a wonderful example of one who gives of herself endlessly.” She smiled down at Patter warmly. “Law number three, ‘live in a state of gratitude,’ is so simple but so incredibly powerful. When I was held captive underground in Illsinor Castle, I thought of all of you. I didn’t know if I’d see you again. I would lie in the dampness and think of all that I had here. When I came home, that gratitude never left me. The interesting thing is, I met someone in the dungeon who really saved me by teaching me how little you really need in life. My thanks to Madame Lichen, whom I will never forget. ‘“Leave the world in a better state,’ law number four, is really why we are here, isn’t it? Some may think this law means after you are gone. I believe we can remember this law every day, continually contributing to the betterment of society and the earth. Just smiling at your neighbors enables the power. It’s fantastic! Thanks to all of you for helping me to remember. “The next law, ‘never forget our purpose,’ is one we have to constantly work on. We Crysnix aren’t perfect, but we understand the laws easier than the humans do. We know that the power is always waiting to deliver; we just have to stay open to it so that it may flow through us and be of service to our friends in the next dimension.” Princess Amethyst looked down into the eyes of her friends and neighbors as they listened to her interpretation of the laws. Each Volare Solus was slightly different, as the laws were interpreted by the heart of the individual expressing them. The manifestation of the pure life force was evident and always made the first part of the ceremony inspiring. Lisa Shore
