HALONEN AND SYVERSEN CREATE SOUND HEALING, THERAPEUTIC, SOOTHING MUSIC New age music can be enjoyed on a lot of different levels, especially since the genre’s parameters are so broad (ranging from ambient to world-fusion). But sometimes it is nice to get back to basics. Remember when much new age was for healing? Well, the new album by Runar Halonen and Tron Syversen, Voices From Heaven, Vol. II, reminds me of the “good old days” of the new age evolution. Yes, this is Vol. II. The first volume came out a couple of years ago and was successful enough to spawn this follow-up. The new recording is comprised of three long tracks. Syversen, who is from Norway and has many successful new age music albums out, composes the melodies and plays piano and synthesizers. Halonen sings wordless vocals in a sort of ethereal style that at times even sounds like another instrument. Both of these guys have long experience in the sound healing business. On one piece they are joined by a female wordless singer, Helene Edler Lorentzen, who has worked with Syversen previously. The only other sounds on the recording are some Tibetan singing bowls on one tune, a little buried bass on another, and Lorentzen playing some quiet ethnic hand drum. Supposedly the music was improvised, and Syversen is a master at creating extemporaneously. Halonen is no slouch either in following where Syversen leads. Because of the improvisation, the music occasionally gets a bit ambient, but Syversen’s innate melodic sensibilities keeps the music sounding good. According to their background materials, this is “a powerful sound-healing album that creates unique frequencies that will be received into the listener’s body.” So you are supposed to feel the music as well as listen to it, allow it to be therapeutic as well as enjoying the sounds, journey to inner-self while appreciating the music too. At the very least the music IS extremely relaxing and good for meditation, massage or yoga.
