Deirdre Hade Since ancient times, crystals, minerals and other gemstones have been used for their tonifying, clarifying, healing and energy-clearing properties. They are known to dissolve mental, emotional, spiritual and physical energy blockages, and have been used to build up desirable energetic qualities. Peacefulness, mental acuity, fertility, courage, psychic awareness … there are stones for them all.
The Ancient Egyptians prized lapis lazuli and adorned the clothing of the royal family with lapis to help inspire self-awareness, honesty, morality and compassion. Clear quartz crystals and other stones were often included in burials to help guide the deceased on their journey and clear their way into the afterlife. In ancient China, green jade was used to attract prosperity and luck. In the course of my life and work as a mystic, I’ve had tremendous success using different crystals and stones for helping balance and calm emotions as well as help the body heal from various imbalances and illnesses. Crystals also help the healthy body to stay healthy, supporting the body to do what it was created to do, which is heal and maintain itself. What stones to use for what? Physics has shown that everything is pure energy and that everything in existence is marked by a different kind of energy, including minerals and crystals. This is a new field of scientific investigation—a field of knowledge that the ancient mystics and shamans have always known about and worked with. Your body is always detecting energy, whether it’s of a person, place or thing. This innate survival skill helps you to take the appropriate action if you feel something odd when you walk into a room and sense something is not right. When you do this you are reading an energy, feeling energy. And being in touch with this depth of sensitivity and awareness just might save your life. The same is true with health and healing. Perhaps you’re pulled to wear a particular color or stone. Or you’re moved to go sit next to a mountain stream. You feel so great because all of the negative ions in the water are helping your body to heal. Your body knows what it needs and what to do. So, let’s begin with the basics and talk about which stones are most useful to enhance your day-to-day life in this modern age. Considering the busy-ness and crazy energies we are all experiencing at this point in our journey through what I call The Age of Surprise (aren’t there so many amazing things happening, both troubling and exciting, that you never would have thought you’d see in a million years?!). To help support us through these times I recommend rose quartz. Rose quartz is the queen of calm and is a stone that everyone should be carrying in their pocket or purse right now. Carry her with you, place her on your desk, hold her in your hand, rub her tummy and you will be happy to see how much calmness and hope she can bring into any situation. The crystal of home, rose quartz makes us feel balanced and secure and “at home” in our skin no matter where we find ourselves—in an argumentative business meeting, an upsetting PTA meeting, you name it. On the other hand, there are crystals that help us stay motivated and inspired: Blue Lapis, Azurite, and clear quartz. Lapis and Azurite are the crystals that bring in new ideas, stimulate our intellect, and bring insight. So carry these stones with you whenever you are in need of inspiration and new ideas. Quartz is clarity; it’s your truth and helps the pure inspiration within you to come flowing forth in an edifying manner. You can even put these crystals in your drinking water to help imbue your water with a specific desirable frequency. I personally use amethyst, clear quartz and rose quartz because they create the frequencies of love, hope, and clarity. They also transmute negative energy, and amethyst clears negative energy. Crystals and the chakras As we all know, chakras are energy centers in the body that emit and respond to very specific energetic frequencies. The chakras are the seven centers of energy in the body that begin at the base of the spine and go up to the top of the head. Here are the crystals I recommend to help clear, balance and maintain the strength of the seven main chakras in the body: Crown Chakra/7th chakra – Violet, white, and gold are associated with the Crown Chakra at the top of the head. The Crown Chakra is the direct connection point to the spiritual levels, and violet is the color that brings polarities together in a state of balance, opening a connection with all other frequencies in the universe. It also contains the energy of completion. The stones best aligned with the Crown Chakra are amethyst and clear quartz crystal. Interestingly, amethyst means “not intoxicated.” Kings and Queens used to drink from amethyst cups in order to avoid getting drunk. But if we look at this ability from the spiritual point of view, amethyst helps clear away the “intoxication” induced by the illusion of separation that dwelling in a physical body creates. Third Eye Chakra/pineal gland/6th chakra - The Third Eye Chakra is related to intuition and the opening of spiritual vision, and is associated with the color indigo. The stone indigo kyanite stimulates the pineal gland and may help activate psychic abilities. Purple scapolite is another stone for the third eye that provides psychic protection and opens psychic awareness. The Throat Chakra/5th chakra – The Throat Chakra is all about speaking your Truth and is associated with the color turquoise. Wearing turquoise, both the color and the stone, helps in clearing away any negative energies blocking your ability to speak, which often show up as a fear of speaking and singing in public. Turquoise also strengthens the immune system. The Heart Chakra/4th chakra – The Heart Chakra is all about the embodiment and expression of love and it is related to the color green. For millennia green jade has been valued as a stone that balances and soothes the heart. It is a powerful remover of the blocks to receiving love and giving love. Green jade is also known as the victory stone for attracting and manifesting love. Solar Plexus Chakra/3rd chakra – The Solar Plexus Chakra is all about self-esteem and the power of transformation. The color associated with this chakra is yellow, and the stone that works brilliantly for this center is citrine. Citrine calms anxiety, sending a powerful message from the brain to your tummy that “I am safe.” It clears away unnecessary fear, and it releases unwanted stress. Sacral Chakra/2nd chakra – The second chakra is your power base and is associated with the color orange. Orange fluorite is a wonderful stone to help align and strengthen your personal power with your life purpose. It also heals the reproductive organs and gives those organs strength and support. Root Chakra/1st chakra – The Root Chakra is all about survival and safety, grounding and strength. It is the foundation upon which we build our lives and is always associated with the color red. Stones to help build root chakra strength are red carnelian and red jasper, both of which cleanse and provide balance and activation of the Root Chakra. This is a general guideline for which crystal to use for different needs and situations. But really, the best guideline is whatever you’re drawn to! Whatever makes you happy, whatever makes you feel connected and awash in blissful, “yippee!” energy – that’s the crystal that is speaking to you in the moment. That’s your body’s knowing and the energies at work informing you of what you need. And don’t be surprised if (or rather when) you suddenly wake up one morning and have no desire to wear that stone again and are pulled to another. Forming relationships with crystals, you find a little piece of magic in life. And truthfully, whether the power of various crystals and stones to heal and have other influences can be scientifically proven or not (Interestingly, scientific studies are showing color therapies like syntonic phototherapy to be incredibly effective for healing all sorts of illnesses and imbalances), we all need a little more magic in our lives. Crystals are an easy way to find and anchor that magical, hopeful part of ourselves—something we all need right about now. So go ahead and play with these beautiful beings … be dazzled by them and get happy! Credit: Deirdre Hade is a mystic, spiritual teacher, motivational speaker, and author.
