A Moment of Light We are all given information during our lives but how do we know what it's supposed to mean? It feels like many life lessons are retrospect, after the fact. We can relay the information to others to try to help them in their life path but how do we know it will apply to them the same way it did to us? Is that why we write it down? So others can tell others and maybe help someone. But fact is there is really no way to know what each person needs to know, and even if they do know maybe it might not appeal to them, or apply to them, or interest them. I guess we can all just forward our information and let everyone decide if it might fit their personal script...or not. A gang of kids were outside playing, running around an open field next to the small housing area. It was a simple time of life after one war and before another. People were healing and focusing on the simple things of life such as having a good job and raising their family. Everyone tried to keep life level and easy to understand and get use to life with no threat of war and death and danger. Most of the time things were okay but what the adults had been through for the last 15 years was staggering and there were no 'normal', generally accepted rules anymore. Society was trying to figure out how to apply what we had learned with what we had always lived with. None of the rules seemed to fit. Nothing was the same. Society no longer knew what to think or expect. As the children were running around chasing each other, laughing, being free, a thunder storm began building up, some clouds, some wind, some thunder. The children ranged in age from about 5 to 11, and soon an older one yelled 'get in to the shelter! Lighting!' I discovered I was a child who trusted logical instincts but never allowed them to rule my life. But days like this taught me that some rules of life are there for a reason. I ran to the small shed in the middle of the field and as I stood looking at the storm from the doorway, I saw one of our friends still running in the field. To this day we don't know exactly what happened, but to the eyes of this 10 year old, it looked like the friend stumbled and fell and a second later lighting struck the ground right next to her. It looked like she had been hit by the lighting. We all stood in the shed staring, alarmed. None of us moved. I was too young to know what lightning would do to a person, but I remember clearly my 'instinct voice' (for lack of a better word to call what we all hear during our lives) spoke to me saying: "Follow your instincts, you did the right thing. Stay put!" The older children of the group ran out to help the child laying in the field. She was okay. She had not been hit. It was decided that if she had not fallen when she did, she would have been hit by the lighting. We all stood there saying nothing. Speaking for myself, I realized I had listened to my inner voice and I used that lesson for the rest of my life. There are times to do what you know is right! I think everyone has moments like that. It makes us realize this life includes much more than any of us can possibly imagine. Instead of trying to analyze it or name it, maybe the main message is, use it, do what feels right....and don't do things that would invite lighting to strike! To this day I have always felt that lighting strike was a signal. It hit close to my friend but did not kill her. And then, a short time later, my father left us, his family, and ran off with the lady next door with her children. A short time after a lighting strike, something just as bad struck my family and life was never again easy or ordinary, ever. I have always considered that strike to be a warning that life will send moments we cannot control, but how we use the warnings we have been given will help us get back up and make the most of what is left. We survived not having a father's support or love. We traveled and saw a lot of new things. My mother worked and remarried. It taught all of us to be self sufficient and brave, and that in spite of it all, life depends on our choices and we are capable of a lot more than we realize! Listen to the lightning when it comes into your life. It will help you realize what to avoid, help you respect the inner voice, and be okay with doing what is right!
