![]() Mary Cole When you’re looking for love, your head often differs from your heart. Your Sun sign is the self in action— the person who lives, talks, thinks, and expresses themselves out in the big wide world. Sun sign compatibility, therefore, is the most visible layer in any partnership, and only really reflects our base impressions. When it comes to lasting, more nuanced connections, however, we start by looking at the Moon. The Sun may be what we want, but the Moon is what we need. It is our reactive self— the part of us that feels without words. It’s the home of all our vulnerabilities, and vulnerability is crucial to any budding love affair. Without it, there’s neither thrills nor intimacy. For your Moon sign to truly meld with another’s, there has to be a blend of both the similar and the complementary for your relationship to grow. Using the lessons of Tarot’s Major Arcana, we break down the ways to help your heart grow.
Moon in Aries—The Wheel of Fortune Having the Moon in Aries isn’t easy. The mellow lunar vibes of this planet sometimes clash with Aries’ bright, fiery, and impatient expression. Aries Moon people are quick-tempered and ardent, with a passionate nature that keeps them moving (or falling, or flying, or…) Their reactions usually burn bright and hot, or blow up into dramatic proportions. They are naturally brave and quite scrappy, making them a bit accident-prone. They are independent but also are good at providing energetic leadership to others. It’s easy for these folks to fall in love truly, madly, and deeply, get wildly hurt, and then brush themselves off to do it all over again. Unfortunately, these tendencies also lead them to become easily bored. Aries Moon people make for enthusiastic, highly sexed partners who are sometimes on the selfish side. The Wheel of Fortune card matches Aries Moon’s can-do spirit, but asks that it broaden its horizons beyond new-project energy. Aries is a sign of beginnings, but not usually of completions and endings. With the Wheel of Fortune’s expansive Sagittarian energy, Aries Moon can take a cue to use their enthusiasm in a larger, more continuous way instead of merely burning out. Moon sign matches: Leo, Libra, Sagittarius Moon in Taurus—The World The Moon is traditionally exalted in Taurus, meaning that it finds its happiest placement in this stable sign. Taurus Moon finds pleasure and safety in beautiful, comfortable things, and feel supremely satisfied when provided with good food and drink. This is the Moon sign for chocoholics! Money in the bank, a solid living situation, and a stocked pantry make for a very happy Taurus Moon. They are possessive and somewhat gluttonous, and need to be able to hold onto things, whether that means literally or figuratively. They often respond very strongly to any threats on their security or stability. Stubbornness and getting in ruts are dangers for them, and sometimes they need to be talked down from their conventional reactions to things. Taurus Moons are also quite sensual and find it soothing to be touched, or to listen to music with their sweethearts. The World card is about the deep fulfillment that comes with integration and dynamic balance; it reflects achievement, which is a Taurean interest, although it speaks to a more active and engaged method than passive Taurus Moon is familiar with. The World merely asks for them to relax their grip and set their sights on broader horizons than the one in front of them. Moon sign matches: Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn Moon in Gemini— The High Priestess Gemini Moon is talkative and excitable, and they like to show off their versatility when tested. They are emotional jugglers who are willing to tackle many feelings (or lovers) at once. Sometimes, the tendency is for Gemini Moon to rationalize what they are feeling, instead of just, well, feeling it. They can also talk themselves in and out of things with extreme ease, which, depending on the day, can delight or infuriate their partners. Gemini Moons are restless and often quick responders, especially with their speech or writing, and they are always game for discussions. They sometimes have trouble really trusting their emotions, and, despite their verbal skills, may find it hard to articulate what’s in their hearts and guts. Many Gemini Moons have neurotic tendencies and may fidget when distracted. They feel jumpy when stagnant and are impatient for change or flow to continue, making them a somewhat flighty choice of lover. Gemini Moon is sometimes known for superficiality— something the High Priestess card discourages. Instead, it asks Gemini Moon to stay still for a moment and probe the mystery. Gemini Moons have a strongly mental take on their own feelings, which can help serve the deeper forms of analysis this card requires. Moon sign matches: Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Pisces Moon in Cancer— The Star The Moon is ruled by sensitive Cancer, so its powers are heightened here. Emotional, intuitive, and sentimental, Cancer Moon makes for a romantic and tender partner. They are imaginative and kind, given to nostalgia and frequent reflection. Cancer Moons are also prone to depression and just a general case of the blues. Their reactive state tends to be defensive or worried when faced with any kind of adversity. Moods can shift quickly, surprising some of their more unprepared peers. They give a higher-than normal level of emotional attention to their family and their closest, most trusted loved ones; in Cancer Moon’s heart, they are without question an extension of family. Sometimes this energy can turn clingy or smothering. Cancer Moons also have a bit of a hoarding nature due to their sentimental, nostalgic tendencies. They hold onto keepsakes, knick-knacks, postcards, and even mundane things like expired food at the back of the fridge. As lovers, they enjoy a caregiving position almost to a fault, but also can turn the tables— many of this placement are classic “Momma’s Boy” types. The Star card is a lesson in active, rather than passive, serenity— something Cancer Moon desperately needs. It is a means for hope, inspiration, and generosity to grow legs and cover ground, rather than sit still. For the Cancer Moon that frets, this card also speaks to the importance of being tranquil amid trouble. Moon sign matches: Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces Moon in Leo— Strength Leo Moons are enthusiastic, affectionate, dramatic, and loving. They love to have fun! Courageous and loyal, they respond to challenges with strong presence, leadership, and dependability. They are highly creative, intuitive, and imaginative, and require a willing audience to feel truly appreciated. Leo Moons also appreciate the finer things in life, especially great entertainment, excellent food and beautiful surroundings. They must guard against a tendency to be overbearing or bombastic with their energy, some of which may present itself as show-offy. Lovers that are stable and/or enthusiastic make a good match for them, creating a foundation on which to build their confidence (of which they secretly have little of). Leo Moons are also prone to petulance and sulking when they feel dismissed or forgotten. A sign that diffuses and does not escalate these moments is ideal for partnership. The Strength card asks Leo Moon to use their vitality in a softer way. In the picture on the card, the woman is controlling the lion with a gentle touch. Much of Leo Moon’s true power lies in its warmth and charisma, rather than its force of will. The Strength card encourages these qualities; at the same time, it calls upon compassion and patience as other virtues to aspire to. Moon sign matches: Aries, Taurus, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius Moon in Virgo— The Empress The Moon’s placement in Virgo might be considered awkward by some, but to anyone familiar with the five love languages, it’s uniquely special. They are excellent when it comes to acts of service, even when they sometimes find themselves drowning in anxiety or “pros/cons” graphs. They can be incredibly helpful, as their way of responding is to investigate, shape, and serve. Virgo Moon tends to be shy, but their reserves of nervous energy can make them very talkative when feeling challenged. They are also prone to worry and hypochondria, sometimes with psychosomatic ailments that spring directly from stress. They have a critical streak and must learn to put away their wagging fingers to spare sensitive feelings. Virgo Moon’s sharp reflexes, way with words, and innate intellectual ability also enable them to succeed at debate, literary arts, and problem-solving. As lovers, they are practical and common-sense, and excel in showing you your worth in measurable ways. You may even receive a few expertly-metered odes in your honor. The Empress card is already incredibly earthy, and Virgo Moon is in an Earth sign. It encourages Virgo Moons to really appreciate the other qualities of their own element, and that means learning to savor their sensual side. Virgo Moon can be a little constrictive at times, but the Empress asks it to welcome abundance. Virgo Moon can evolve by learning how to treat their being as one erogenous zone, rather than a source of stress. Moon sign matches: Taurus, Gemini, Capricorn, Aquarius Moon in Libra— Justice Tactful and peacemaking, Libra Moons are the charmers of the zodiac. They seem to have a unique ability to identify with other people’s problems and points of view. At worst, they can rationalize too much, suspending hypotheticals in a vacuum and therefore drowning in indecision. At best, they are almost impossibly sympathetic and make great friends— as well as advice columnists and therapists. Libra Moons are skilled at bringing out the best in people, and they enjoy balance and harmony in their social dealings. They absolutely despise infighting and can sometimes be frustrating in their refusal to take sides in a conflict. Conversely, when the Libra Moon is struck with a problem, they sometimes insist “It isn’t fair!” Some Libra Moons, when presented with adversity, simply prefer to slip away rather than having to make a choice. They can be notorious “French exiters” despite their social skills. Nevertheless, they make for kind, friendly, and sweet romantic partners that can appreciate a day at the museum, and it’s easy to bend their ear when you need to vent about a stressful day. The Justice card encourages Libra Moon not only to be more decisive, but to do it in a more responsible way. It asks that Libra Moon use its devil’s advocate powers as a way to really understand an issue and draw the right conclusions. Sometimes to be truly fair, you must pick a side. Moon sign matches: Aries, Gemini, Leo, Aquarius Moon in Scorpio— The Hanged Man Those with Moon in Scorpio are hearty individuals. Emotional, powerful, and vivid, they are determined and intense people whose true potency really emerges when provoked. Some Scorpio Moons are prone to, dare we say, overreactions. They also become quite jealous about any number of situations, romantic or not, and have a difficult time fighting this natural instinct. Their physical vitality is strong, and they have enormous reserves of endurance. This can enable their grudge-holding side, however, and like most elephants, these Moons never forget. You can rest assured that Scorpio Moons are a passionate sort. They like to be completely absorbed in situations and honor truth and absolution, despite being a little secretive themselves. Scorpio Moons have truckloads of charisma as well; they are large presences as bosses and leaders, and their coaxing skills are legendary. As lovers they are devoted, possibly to the point of obsession. They require someone who can match them emotionally, or at the very least, are sturdy enough to withstand the blast. The Hanged Man card runs contrary to Scorpio Moon’s possessiveness. It asks them, instead, to release and reverse whatever’s been weighing on them. Scorpio Moon has enormous powers of concentration, so it is possible for them to use this energy in a reflective way. Their natural tendency to fixate is diffused by the sacrificial energy of this card. For Scorpio Moon, opening, accepting, and softening are methods of deep transformation. Moon sign matches: Taurus, Cancer, Capricorn, Pisces Moon in Sagittarius— The Hermit People with Moon in Sagittarius are joyful sorts that enjoy experience as an end in itself. They are enthusiastic in their feelings and reactions and have a big-picture outlook that sometimes misses the details. They often act or speak without thinking and seldom have an idea of the consequences. Sag Moons are born movers, and they like to be kept busy or pressing forward in some way. Their blind optimism may sometimes get in the way of common sense, and at worst can seem reckless. The minds and hearts of Sagittarius Moons are prone to broad generalizations and know-it-all tendencies, but they excel at providing hope and levity to people in times of need. They seem naturally lucky and full of youthful energy. In love, they are saucer-eyed and optimistic. Partners of Sagittarius Moons will never lack for excitement and adventure but may sometimes have difficulty in pinning them down. The Hermit card asks Sagittarius Moon to slow down and reflect for a moment. Sagittarius Moon is not the best at looking before they leap, and they often dislike being alone. But like the Hermit, they are seekers. The Hermit and the Sagittarius Moon are both in pursuit of understanding and expansion, although their methods differ. Moon sign matches: Aries, Gemini, Libra, Leo, Pisces Moon in Capricorn— The Fool The emotional response of Capricorn Moon is relatively low. They are known for being somewhat aloof and detached in their affections and their reactions. This makes them terrific in a crisis but perhaps not at gushing poetry. You can catch a glimpse of Capricorn Moon’s warmth by observing their zany, dry humor, which usually charms any uncertain prospective mates. They are sometimes fixated on their goals and can seemingly go on emotional fasts in order to conquer what they’ve set out to do. They must guard against an automatic pessimism or fearfulness, which is based in their innate insecurity more than their practicality. Capricorn Moons benefit by having someone close to them that is (tirelessly!) tender or positive, so that they might escape from underneath their own rainclouds. This may be a daunting task, as Cap Moons are notoriously prideful about impressing others, and do not like to fail or be vulnerable. They are inclined to self-preservation and thus may not make a leap when it comes to matters of the heart. All interested parties should make the first move— boldly and with a warm smile. The Fool card is perhaps the energy Capricorn Moon needs most! It demonstrates how folly can be joyful and delightful, and that pipe dreams are important for the spirit. To this ambitious sign, planning and preparing is usually how they achieve. But what if they pursued the Fool’s path for a change? They might be pleasantly surprised by the results. Moon sign matches: Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Virgo Moon in Aquarius— The Lovers Aquarius Moons have a striking personal magnetism despite their remoteness. They are the sort of creature you can spot from across a room, but are too nervous to approach. It’s only a construct, of course— Aquarius Moons like to hold onto an air of mystery. Both Aquarian Suns and Moons have a reputation for being stiff and unemotional, perhaps even robotic. This is only partially true; they do in fact have feelings, but under very tight—almost systematic—control. They are romantics, but eccentrically so, and may express themselves in unusual and unpredictable ways. Their reactions to things are often so totally unexpected as to be out of character. Despite this, they are humanistic and idealistic in their approach, and are concerned with being helpful and kind. They tend to hold a lot in, and can suffer from nervous tension as a result. As partners, they are there when you need them as long as you can communicate your desires. The Lovers card encourages Aquarius Moon to consider others emotionally instead of intellectually. For this aloof Moon, the Lovers offers partnership, sharing, and coming together. Aquarius Moon can benefit from the vulnerability of relating to others, and therefore create kinship. Moon sign matches: Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Aquarius Moon in Pisces— Temperance The owner of a Pisces Moon seems like an emotional vessel for the universe. They are easily, deeply, and frequently moved by the world around them, and can be reduced to a puddle without much provocation. They dislike conflict intensely and sometimes can be wishy-washy in their methods to avoid it. Those with the Moon in this sign can be of low vitality. They are possess enormous imaginations, but for this reason are also prone to fantasy and self-deception. They can over-romanticize a person or circumstance beyond the limits of reality. Their escapist tendencies can cause trouble in the form of addiction, and some Pisces Moons may resort to lying in a method to keep up the appearances they’ve constructed in their heads. Others may be vulnerable to mood disorders. However, their enormous capacity for empathy makes them uniquely cut out to be caregivers and healers, provided they protect themselves with the proper psychic boundaries. As romantic partners, they are true devotees of “puppy love” and will shower their intended with adoration. The Temperance card gives a lesson of moderation to the Pisces Moon. It shows that maintaining balance and finding middle ground is both healthy and centering, although it may be a minor leap for Pisces Moon to make at first. It also speaks to joining forces and creating synthesis, which Pisces Moon must learn when they are feeling overwhelmed. Moon sign matches: Cancer, Gemini, Libra, Scorpio https://www.7tarot.com |
