Nobody operates in isolation. Wherever we go we offer a vibration that has the potential to influence others. Do not underestimate the significance of this. It is a most powerful thing indeed. Entrainment describes the way in which one element can impact upon another, dragging it along in its wake. It is a form of energy ecology - it takes far less energy to work in harmony with something than it does to compete against it.
Because entrainment is such an innate process, it is of vital importance that we consciously question the value of the dominant force in any situation. We humans are great mimics, and often unconsciously imitate a person or a group that we identify with in some way. We change our accent, wear certain clothes and adopt particular beliefs in order to fit in. Who hasn’t faced an unfamiliar situation and tangibly relaxed when they are greeted by someone calm, warm and reassuring? Conversely, we all know of the horrors that await when an entire country is swept along on the tide of dictatorship. Love is the most fundamental frequency, and it has a harmonic signature, pattern and movement that nature constantly strives to align with. It is the very basis of all existence. When communities are fearful then things become unstable and more chaotic. Entropy is high, implying great uncertainty and unpredictability. When we live from the heart, with empathy, understanding and tolerance of others, it becomes easier to co-create and we are more productive. When communities synchronise and align to a shared vision the perfect conditions seem to manifest more rapidly and projects become more coherent, stable, organised and durable. Love is a unifying force, and society functions all the better for it. An individual may work towards their own ambitions, but when they also support the whole then a mutually supportive atmosphere of trust and cooperation is generated, and life itself rushes to assist. When the welfare of a community becomes the central focus, rather than that of the individual, then everybody gains. Consider the human body. When 100 trillion cells or so cooperate in harmony, exchanging their energy freely, then the body functions perfectly and experiences wellness. When an individual cell or group of cells stop giving or receiving, or keep everything for themselves at the expense of other cells, then a cancer sets in. As the dis-ease spreads, whole sections of the bodily community – the organs, the skin, the bones, the blood, become affected, losing their ability to function, until ultimately all is lost. Nobody gains. It is futile to fight disease with yet more disease. The only possible solution is to care for each aspect of the body and its environment, providing nourishment to all. The more fully we engage with life in our own unique way, the more we contribute to the Universe’s knowing of itself. When there is sameness nothing new is born. When individuality, diversity and multiplicity combine, an infinite range of new potentials becomes available. With the joining together of two apparently separate entities something different and distinct can be created. All living organisms within an ecosystem are dependent upon genetic diversity for their survival. Each tiny part of the whole is vital. You are vital. There is no one else quite like you, and the Universe needs your uniqueness. The generous don’t conceal all they have to offer, afraid that it will be lost or stolen. Instead, they wisely share their gifts and watch them multiply. They have no fear that someone might do better, because they understand the value that comes from enabling others to live to their full potential. They realise that when someone is oppressed then we all become smaller. There’s nothing quite like the feeling that is generated by an act of kindness arising as an urge from the soul. When we give from the heart, we are much closer to our natural way of behaving. The light, expansive, joyous feeling that results when we come into congruence with our true nature, inspires us to give ever more freely. The desire to be of service is innate. It is not something that needs to be strenuously worked at, but which arises spontaneously. It is critical in the evolutionary process. Our way of giving is far more important than what we give. Small gifts of time, attention and appreciation are precious gifts indeed. Those who give in a coldly calculating way in order to achieve material gain or to enhance their reputation will not receive the fullest of Universal blessings as their giving has not arisen from a soul impulse. True service stems from the heart, not from the scheming of the intellect. It is demonstrated with our actions. Giving does not exhaust our resources, it is simply a manifestation of the Universe reorganising itself. Ultimately each giver, each receiver and each gift is a part of the same cosmic soup. Giving that is rooted in the soil of the heart has no expectation of recompense. It is unconditional. It doesn’t seek to get something back in return. The heart doesn’t do someone a one-time favour and then expect a lifetime of indebtedness by way of acknowledgement. It just gives. Helping others feels good. Having someone around who cares feels good. When we act from the heart, the hearts of others become happy, and our heart feels lighter too. Our obsession with the self, in all its many fearful guises - self-seeking, self-serving, self-delusion, self-esteem, self-pity, self-interest, self-absorption, selfishness in general – and our lack of regard for others, lies at the heart of the majority of our difficulties. If we are to evolve as a global community, we must learn to put others at the centre of all that we choose for ourselves. In so doing we will find that we, too, are at the heart of everything. Choosing for the well-being of others does not mean renouncing our own needs. On the contrary, every act of self-care is radical. We can’t provide water for another if we ourselves don’t have water. Nor does it mean sacrificing our uniqueness. There is not a musical work on the planet that can adequately describe the diversity of the human species. Not even if there were a million instruments, each capable of playing a thousand octaves. We each contribute our own personal sound to the music of life. No one will see things in quite the same way that we do, each will view life through the filters of their own experiences. The extent to which we are able to express our distinctiveness, in collaboration with others who are also able to fully express theirs, is the extent to which we are truly free. It is the very essence of freedom. When we become too rigid in our expectations of others we start to bump into trouble. Have you noticed how the most authoritarian regimes, with all their controlling restrictions and prohibitions, are also those whose people are the poorest? The greatest leaders are those that bring out the best in others, encouraging teamwork and innovation. They are master weavers, combining the skills of different individuals to achieve things that would otherwise have been impossible. They don’t dominate. They allow rather than interfere, and it works. Nothing detracts from our serenity as quickly as silly squabbles over land, material goods, reputations and control. Stop fighting. Especially, stop fighting yourself. When we fight, we offer resistance, and the laws of nature ensure that wherever resistance occurs things hang around for a lot longer. Instead, pay attention to the patterns of thinking that are driving the drama to which we are all addicted. A win for all may initially be difficult to negotiate but seeking mutually beneficial solutions is ultimately far more constructive than one person having things all their own way. Our real strength lies in flexibility and forgiveness, in our ability to live and let live without imposing. The notion of the self-made man is nothing but a fallacy. We are made of the stuff of stars and the kind deeds of others. We breathe air that has filtered through the lungs of trees. We are moulded by words of encouragement and chastisement. We are shaped by the societies within which we live and the opinions of others. Those that thrive are not the ones who fiercely battle to defend their differences, but those with open minds and open hearts who doggedly seek to develop what is held in common and to establish authentic connection. As we seek to identify, rather than compare, we find that no matter what our differences, our blood is all the same shade of red, and it is stirred by the same vital life force. We cannot compel others to change. We can only influence the hearts of others by sharing the wisdom of our own. When we begin to understand the interconnection of everything that is, then we also start to realise that nothing is totally ours. As we look deeply into the hearts of others and love the world just as we would love ourselves, then we realise that we are not so very different after all. When we look at others, we will only ever see ourselves reflected back. The way of the heart becomes the only way, and the way of love, the ultimate way.
