Upon time and space is written the thoughts, the deeds, the activities of an entity – as in relationships to its environs, its hereditary influence; as directed – or judgment drawn by or according to what the entity's ideal is. Hence, as it has been oft called, the record is God's book of remembrance.~ Edgar Cayce James, a well-groomed man in his late 50’s, stands up from the back row during the question segment of my mediumship program one balmy spring evening at the Open Mind in Sewickley, Pa, a metaphysical shop near Pittsburgh. “I don’t know why I’m here this evening,” he begins, his voice quivering. “I saw the sign out front about your program and it drew me to come in. I feel kind of silly asking this, but…” Suddenly, James’s voice is drowned out by several large booms outside which rattle the old, glass windows of the room. I recall that today the town is celebrating its founding date by holding a street carnival followed by fireworks. Many in the group look anxiously towards the windows. I remind them about the celebration. Several people chuckle and remark how close the store is to the fireworks’ launch point. I focus in again on what James wants to ask. Little did I realize then that the loud booms heard at the exact moment James began to speak would turn out to be an astonishing synchronicity related to his concerns that evening. “Um- as I was saying,” he continues, “I don’t know why I came here today, but something told me you may be able to help me with a problem I’ve been having since I visited Gettysburg (Pa.) Battlefield (from the Civil War) last year. Since that time, I’ve been haunted by anxiety, losing sleep and feeling restless. I don’t know why this is happening. Do you have any insight that could help me with this?” he asks, looking directly at me. I pause to tune into his energy before answering. I sense the insight he needs is not a message from his loved ones in spirit, but rather one from his spirit guides who have knowledge of his Akashic File- the memory bank of his soul’s experiences. Inspiration strikes me through clairsentience (emotions.) “Would you understand feeling guilty for some reason?” I ask him. “I do not know why, but that is the feeling I pick up around your being there at that battlefield.” As is usually the case during readings, I have no idea what this means but trust the impression I’ve received. James nods. “Yeah, there is something going on with that feeling! I just can’t put my finger on it.” I ask him to see me after the program to further discuss this issue. He agrees and sits down. After the program concludes, James makes an appointment to come to my office to have a past-life regression session in hopes of getting to the root of his peculiar distress. Fast forward a month or so to my office before the session. James tells me that the anxiety and guilt he had were particularly strong upon viewing a painting depicting a battle scene on a tour he took of the Civil War battlefield. Ever since that day last year, he says he has been troubled by all of the negative feelings. During the regression which is accomplished by guiding clients into light hypnosis, James travels to a former life in which he was a commander in the Union army during the Civil War. As I sit beside him rapidly taking notes, he relates specific battle maneuvers, names of soldiers and details of what his life was like during those days of war. He shares feelings of overwhelming guilt after one battle ends with many of his men being injured and killed. Further, he relates that he made poor decisions in his command which led to his being ashamed and guilty about the deaths of his men who trusted him. The information from him flows so quickly I can barely keep up in my note-taking. After awhile, the information slows. I lead him back to present-day awareness through guided meditation. After the session, James and I are both astonished by the amount of detail that came through. Further, it appears to be compellingly relevant to his vexing anxiety and guilt. He is drained emotionally, but says he now feels more peace than he’s felt in months. He has finally made sense of the unexplained, troubling feelings he’s had for months: the painting of the battlefield sparked off the long-buried remorse from his days during the war, particularly the ones related to his perceived failure in leadership. During our follow-up discussion, I’m suddenly hit with the memory of the loud booms during the program at the moment James stood up. Could these be reminiscent of the sounds of canons and gunfire on the battlefield? What an astonishing synchronicity! “I can’t help but think the loud booms were similar to guns and canons being fired. It’s as if the universe was giving validation of what you were going to ask. That’s quite amazing, isn’t it?” I ask him. James is silent for a moment. “Yeah, it sure is. I can’t get over all of this. Wow!” Before he leaves, I advise him to ponder the newly surfaced information, taking note of any nuances in his emotions and thoughts in the days ahead. These he could record by writing about them in a journal. A few weeks later, I receive a phone call from Julie- James’ fiancé. She says she has no idea what we discussed the day of James’ session, but he was a much different man after having it. Apparently he didn’t share the details of his session with her, but soon after, she noticed he was much calmer, happier and carefree than she had ever seen him. He had also begun sleeping through the night instead of tossing and turning as he had previously. She states she’d noticed a change with him right away after the session. Before hanging up, Julie thanks me profusely and adds, “The change in James is remarkable! Whatever happened in that session really helped him.” Although I do not know if he was able to validate the battlefield information relayed during the regression through research, after hearing from Julie, I have no doubt James’s life took a turn for the better once he obtained conscious knowledge of his previously unresolved emotions which were rooted in a prior-life experience.
