The world is entering a “mental health tsunami” due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown. But we are not alone. Adopting a pet in this time can heal our souls and improve our health because our pets are here to help us and support us during those challenging times.
Now is the best time to adopt a pet. But why is that? So many of us understand now how lonely we really are when being alone by ourselves at home. Where before our families, friends and work gave us a strong framework and support in the fulfillment of our social needs, quarantine has shown us a different side of us. Do you feel lonely in quarantine? You are not alone! Due to an aging population and decreasing family bonds in many countries worldwide, loneliness has become a major issue in our modern world. And quarantine has just increased the feeling of loneliness for many people. A study concludes that 61% of Americans either feel lonely or socially isolated. And this is where a pet comes to our rescue! A whopping 89% of survey participants got a pet and confirmed that their pet has helped them feel less lonely. In general, people with the closest bonds with their pets see the highest positive impact on their feelings of loneliness. Dog owners have their social needs more fulfilled than people without pets. They established a clear and unique link between owner well-being and their effectively social needs fulfillment through their dog to a higher extent than through their human relations. Interestingly, the support the pets provided to their owners didn't compete with the support from other relationships and actually even complemented it. Pets can support our mental health and have a positive impact on our overall well-being. Many pet parents admit that their pet helps them to cope with everyday life much better due to their furry companions. The bond with our pets show even in our hormone levels. After just five minutes cuddling our pet, the “happy hormone” dopamine and “wellbeing hormone” endorphin shows an increased output. Women can even benefit more from the physical interaction than men! In the same time, cortisol levels are significantly decreased when interacting with pets. Both, humans and dogs can benefit from increased levels of the “love” hormone oxytocin through social interaction of humans and dogs even with a little as three minutes stroking of a dog. Therefore, pets are our best de-stress boosts! “Laughter is the best medicine.” This common saying is true. Laughter reduces our stress, depression, anxiety, and pain. The beneficial impact of laughter on the immune system is well known. Dog owners laugh more frequently than people without pets. People who own both dogs and cats laugh even more. If you need more laughter in your life, get a dog; the fun will never end! But that’s not all. Not everything between heaven and earth can be measured. The energy that flows between our pets and us is something truly amazing. Their unconditional love helps them to read our minds and feel our deep-rooted sensations and feelings. We can communicate with our pets even wordlessly just by letting the energy flow between us. Dogs are truly gifted in this as the connection with them enters deep into our souls and makes us whole again. But it’s not only dogs and cats that help us cope and connect us with our souls and nature again. Horses can feel our own feelings so deeply that this has a hugely beneficial impact on our inner balance and wisdom. This is based on their unique ability of hypervigilant sense. Nowadays so many people are out of balance and not connected with nature anymore. Their souls are empty and unfulfilled. Horses radiate an energy field when being in a relaxed and safe state. This energy field can help people become grounded. Horses inspire people to find their inner freedom and to let their energy float through their bodies. In other words, being in a horse’s presence can help us raise our self-awareness, listen to our bodies, and relieve our unconscious tension and stress. Interaction with a horse helps to heal us in a profound way. It balances our mind, body, and soul —even when we don’t realize that we need to be healed. This helps us to access our own inner awareness, true power, and inner wisdom to find the answers and solutions to our problems and questions deep within ourselves as one pillar for healing our souls. Our pets can communicate through their energy, but we have to learn again to open our souls to them. The incredible feeling of happiness so deep in our souls is a treasure that we should cherish. It makes us different, more loved and loving persons with a deeper sense of real wisdom and fulfillment. Being rich is not a monetary matter, it is the enrichment of our souls that make us rich beyond means– and our pets are here to help us, accompany us on our path through life and love us. I urge you: Let’s go back to nature and our origins. Let’s learn to trust our senses, our inner feelings, and our wisdom; our bodies will not mislead us. Embrace your Sixth Sense, gut feeling, universal energy or whatever you wish to call it—and follow the path destined for you. Animals do this naturally and never doubt themselves. Let’s embrace how our pets can help us cope, create enriching, profound and long-lasting joy, happiness and relationships and heal our minds and souls that change our lives to the best! Our pets are not just our best friends and companions, they are also our best teachers for life and most precious gifts for our souls!
