Dr. Stewart Bitkoff This is one of those days, when most of the pain has left me. For one reason or another, which I cannot figure out, the physical discomfort from disease and medication, is gone. I know the pain will return, it is inevitable. Yet for this moment I try to rest, content and rejoice, relatively free of struggle.
Over the years, I have developed some of the ways of the old. At times, body and mind slow and memories increase. Seeing more clearly those I love engage in triumphs, failure and illness; ever slowly and inevitably moving forward toward their next phase. Yes, I have spent a good part of my life trying to journey the mystical, following a spiritual path. While this was important to me, looking back, even more important was to live and love as best I could. You see, life is about living, giving and loving; and while there are many things that tear away at this goal and we become involved in, from this place of old men, that is what is most important. All of us make mistakes, do harmful things and stray from the higher mark. This is all part of life and when you sit and look back across the years, what is most relevant is that you share a part of yourself with others. For there are many rainy days and we all need someone to hold an umbrella over our head, to help protect, guide and keep us moving along. If it be your desire, follow a spiritual path; if it be your desire not to think of spiritual things, then follow this path instead. For you see, we all have a journey, a path and it most important that we follow it. We are all trail blazers, and must follow our own hearts through the rain, snow and into the sunshine. What I desire for you is that you reach-up and embrace all that you were meant to become; so that when you come to this valley of old men/women- you can say, I have lived both in sunshine and rain and this journey has been most glorious. And each moment is yet another opportunity to reach higher, share experience, helping those we love and care about. -SB * * Read my 2 books: Sufism for Western Seekers: Path of the Spiritual Traveler in Everyday Life and The Ferryman’s Dream.
