![]() Robert Allen M.ED., M.DIV., MC.HML., BCC.,CPC-I New year…new resolution…same slump!!! Let’s change the narrative. Changing our narrative must start with shifting how we see, feel, and experience people, places, and things. Have you ever made decisions from an exhausted, frustrated, or irritable state? I have. Has some of your decisions come with less than desirable outcomes? Mine has. So, what now? Exactly! We have to begin to make healthier decisions from undistracted spaces. Many of us, myself included, can easily get tied up with responsibilities, tasks, or even volunteering time to activities and functions that we literally don’t have the time or energy for. If we add on the demands of work, school, family, or any other such responsibilities, we find ourselves more strained for time and energy. So again, how do we shift? We shift by making time for ourselves MINUS the distractions. Take five or ten minutes to simply get away; to retreat. This means shutting everything down to obtain a moment of calm for yourself. Five to ten minutes can then lead to 20 to 30 minutes. With consistency and self-grace minutes can gradually grow to hours. Over the years we have created or picked up some ‘not so good’ health habits. Some we are willing to admit, some we recognize, and others which have become so normalized we don’t realize we do them. By getting away, properly retreating (removing ourselves from familiarity and distractions) we begin to see things more clearly. We gain the ability to become a more honest with ourselves, and in turn maximizing our ability to care ourselves in ways we need it most. In my book ‘Self-care Let’s Start the Conversation’, I talk about the importance of mentors and accountability partners; people we have rapport with that can assist us in becoming more accountable to ourselves and our goals. Changing our narrative has to start with us focusing on small areas of necessary change. Being in a state of mind that affords us the opportunity to transparently look at areas which require change. Remember, self-care is a journey. It is needed and it is possible. Take time to invest in you! When we make ourselves a priority, we will definitely make the time needed. What we do with that precious gift of time should be meaningful. As aforementioned the time is indeed now to invest in you.
