The Greatest Gift You Can Give

Dear One,

In this column in the past months, we have been exploring ways to live from our sacred center while we go about our ordinary lives. From today's vantage point, this has all been preparation for who we will be as we enter this very rich and busy holiday season. We have explored the Greek concept of Meraki – doing everything with consciousness and love. And we have practiced releasing worn ways of being, setting intentions, and breathing deeply to bring awareness to how we are living in any given moment.

During these next holidays, we will want to live with greater contentment, peacefulness, and the loving ways that we know are possible. However, our culture has gone overboard with the importance of giving objects to others, often at great expense, to meet material needs as if this were the purpose of these days. And being the good people that we are, we spend much time, money, and angst trying to accommodate such societal and familial expectations. Then, in the frazzled rush of our lives, it is easy to forget that, first and foremost, we are spiritual beings and that our dharma, our sacred duty is to let go of patterns and behaviors that no longer fit, to release past harmful dynamics and to love fully – first ourselves and others.

So now is a good time to take an assessment of your responses to holiday preparation. Are there patterns that would be good to change? If so, name them, and then, from the spaciousness of your open heart and searching mind, name what would be best to institute instead. This also is a great time to talk to your significant others about ways to live these holy days which bring more soul and more love into all of choices. Invite others to participate as well. In doing so, you are stepping out of ways that leave you depleted, and you are bringing more sacredness into your holiday experiences.

When we remember that we are sacred beings having human experiences, we redirect our attention to the holiness that exists within us. This focus changes our state. Then it is much easier to slow down and to practice doing everything with attention and love. Now we are more available to live, speak, and touch others through our beautiful hearts and gentle minds. We truly see who others are - their beauty, their fragility, and their needs. When we act with love, we are giving the best of ourselves. This changes so much for everyone.

At the soul level, we are light beings and light bearers. Use this light that is your birthright to heal yourself and to share with others. This is the greatest gift that you can give, and it is an ongoing one. This is our soul’s purpose. It is in infinite supply. All we need to do is to remember and to return to this stellar, quiet place inside as often as possible. We are human so we forget. When you remember, return to your deep breathing. Recall your intention to live from your golden loving heart, and then, once again, bring forth your love and this brilliant light as you speak and as you act – no matter what is going on around you.

Throughout the next days and weeks, take time to reconnect with your essence and your sacredness by breathing deeply, relaxing all thoughts, and entering your golden heart - that place within you that is open, filled with love for yourself and the others in your life, and for the peoples of our world. Stay there awhile and absorb the spaciousness, the beauty, the purity, your brilliant light, and your goodness. When the time is right, honor yourself in Namaste, gently open your eyes, and breathe to connect with the outer world. With such fresh eyes, find the wondrous beauty that is all around you and then speak and act with renewed, quiet, loving, and grace-filled peace.
