Patrice Watley Williams/Poetic Lyricist Black me up!
2020, Came in with a crash, Daring us to breathe As we started anew, bereaved A choke hold to the throat I thought I told you to stay woke A vengeance to break And reveal what was already broke. 2020, living unsettled Deadly virus in the air Lurking, taunting us with a perplexed death stare, Go ahead, breathe if you dare. From losing lives to a deadly virus Continued examples of black lives don’t matter! Yes, they say all lives matter But understand, Black Lives Matter. Tame them, chain them, or change them. Oh! this is 2020, Lie on Them, Deny Them, Jail Them, Film “Them” Choking Them! Hmmm Will it ever change? I don’t know but keep saying their names. I was not the first to stand up But.. I.. am.. still standing.. Fighting the Good Fight, with Good Trouble, with our Beloved Brother. Thought I was up, on my way to my life’s mission 2020, smear campaigning my life’s vision. Searching for my place as I magnify my faith I.. am.. still standing.. in God’s grace. You hear defeat? No that’s God’s voice saying sister, stand on your feet. As we question Him in our current existence, Know that He keeps you standing in every existence Even in our resistance. Elevated you when no one was in your rear-view mirror, Wakanda Forever! Can I be any clearer? See I know fear Stared it straight in the eye Turning and churning inside myself Walked and crawled, afraid but brave Weak at times but strong in faith. We are no longer walking away in the quiet silence No longer giving in to the silent cycle of loving our culture, but not our color, Exhausted from trying to make you see the beauty, The strength, the love, the genius, the melanin in me. Through my highest highs and my lowest lows I am not walking away I stand for you, I stand with you, I AM YOU… Standing together, let’s shatter this sequel Stop taking and taking, you see With our current affairs, again, we have proven to be equal. Adding the empowerment of Juneteenth Still loving our black lives, still living our black lives Joining hands, fist to fist, united in faith. Black me up! and God will back you up!
