Barbara Berger We have all heard that we can change our lives by changing our thinking. And that what we focus our attention on grows in our experience.
We have also all heard that it’s so important to think positively. Especially if we want to take our power back and improve our lives. When we understand this, it’s only natural that we start watching our thinking. Because we have started to realize that it is our thinking that determines our experience. So we begin to watch our minds. And that’s when so many of us discover to our great dismay that – oh my God – we are thinking so negatively a lot of the time! The next thing that happens is that we tell ourselves – okay well I just have to stop thinking so negatively and think more positively. But that is easier said than done. Especially because it is the nature of the mind to think in fixed, habitual thought patterns. Once you begin observing your thought patterns you discover that certain types of situations or events usually trigger certain types of thought patterns and responses in you. Which also at times can be quite negative. And in addition to that, once your mind starts moving in a specific direction, it just seems to continue in that direction until something else pops up and gets your attention. This is why it is so difficult for us to tell ourselves to stop thinking negatively. First of all because our minds don’t work like that. The nature of mind is that we are thinking all of the time and we just can’t tell ourselves to stop thinking. And secondly because our minds most often move in familiar patterns. And thirdly because negative thinking is usually just a poor mental habit, something which most of us have learned in our childhood (quite unconsciously of course). Which is also why this negative thinking has unfortunately gained so much momentum in our lives. Because we have been doing this and practicing this negative thinking for such a long time. So what can we do? Well, here is where an understanding of the Great Laws of Substitution can be a really big help. Because the Great Law of Substitution says: You can change your thinking by replacing old thought patterns with new ones. Now why does this understanding help so much? Here’s why: If you tell yourself to stop thinking about something, what you're really doing is focusing more of your attention on the matter, which means you're thinking about whatever it is even more. This is why it doesn’t help to say to yourself I must stop thinking negatively about something. Because all we are really doing is just adding more attention and energy to the matter we don’t want to think about. But if we use our free will and switch our thoughts to something else, to something completely different, we will discover that yes, we can replace our negative thoughts with other thoughts, for example, with positive thoughts. Here's an example of what I mean: If I tell you to stop thinking about the Statue of Liberty in New York, what is the first thing you do? You think of the Statue of Liberty, which is exactly what you don't want to do. But if I say to you… now think about strawberry ice cream, well then you're not thinking about the Statue of Liberty any more, are you? No because now you are thinking about strawberry ice cream. In other words, you were suddenly able to direct the movement of your mind in other direction by replacing one thought with another thought. Which is such a great and important discovery. And which is why the Great Law of Substitution tells you that the scientific way to deal with any negative thoughts and negative conditions is to build the opposite condition into your consciousness by substituting one thought pattern with another. This is a very important tool when it comes to taking control of our minds. If we understand this mechanism, we have a very important key to mastering our minds and changing our thought patterns, no matter how negative they may be at the present moment. And this is why understanding and using the Great Law of Substitution can help us change our thinking and thereby change our lives!
