What is Your Soul Mission? Using Astrology to Find Out By Carmen Turner Schott, MSW, LISW I started studying astrology when I was in high school. I always had a fascination with spirituality, religion, angels, aliens, and ghosts. I never understood where these interests came from because I was not raised to believe in these things. When I purchased my first astrology book at a little bookstore called Mystic Valley in St. Louis, I was amazing at how accurate it described my personality. I started teaching myself astrology and how to calculate birth charts by hand, because we didn’t have computer programs back then to do it. I would draw the birth chart symbols for the signs, planets, and aspects. It became a hobby that I was very passionate about. I read every astrology book I could find and continued to practice.
I started doing birth charts in 1995 for college students when I was in undergraduate and graduate school. I saw how accurate astrology was and how transforming it could be. In just one session I felt I was truly helping people heal and saw how clients left with feelings of validation. The feedback I received was so positive that I started my astrology business at that time. I was in college at the time studying to become a licensed social worker and wanted to use astrology as a tool in counseling because I knew how healing it could be. For the past 30 years, I have been practicing astrology and have used astrology in my work with others. I believe astrology can help us heal, transform, and become more resilient. Astrology is energy and everyone is impacted by it whether they believe in astrology or not. The moon in astrology represents our emotional nature and where we find comfort. In astrology the moon’s nodes are important in understanding what our soul mission is this lifetime. We are born on the exact day, time, and place of birth for a reason. The birth chart is a map of the soul and will show what strengths, spiritual gifts, challenges, and relationships you will have. It reveals the deeper side of your personality and what your soul needs to learn. In my opinion the most important placement in the birth chart is the North Node. It looks like headphones and will be placed in a certain astrological sign and house. The South Node looks like headphones that are turned upside down, and it will be placed in the opposite sign and house of the North Node. Here is an example of a birth chart and you can see the North Node is in sign Taurus in the twelfth house, which is the house of spirituality and spiritual service. The South Node is in Scorpio in the sixth house of health and practical service. Everyone on earth has a soul mission. Astrology can show what that mission is and give tips to moving towards it and releasing outdated patterns from the past. Knowing more about your North Node and South Node will help you learn to balance these two different energies. The South Node is where we feel cozy and comfortable and it’s where we like to be. The North Node energy is uncomfortable and can be scary. Sometimes we don’t even feel the pull towards the North Node energy until after our first Saturn Return which happens between the ages of 27 and 30. After age 31, we start feeling the energy of the North Node because it awakens in our chart. For the first time in our lives, we start moving towards our soul mission. In my new book “Astrology’s Magical Nodes of the Moon”, that I co-authored with astrologer Bernie Ashman we give tips for each North Node sign.
