Have You Ever Met A Man Who Was Not There , But Really Was?
By Stephen William. He is a UK based Medium and Healer and Author of “Nostradamus His Prophecy Finally Explained.” Available on Kindle now.
Regarding the title of my article , it was inspired by poem below , I first heard when I was about eight years old . Antigonish by William Hughes Mearns. Yesterday, upon the stair, I met a man who wasn’t there! He wasn’t there again today, Oh how I wish he’d go away!” When I came home last night at three, The man was waiting there for me But when I looked around the hall, I couldn’t see him there at all! Go away, go away, don’t you come back anymore! Go away, go away, and please don’t slam the door… Last night I saw upon the stair, A little man who wasn’t there, He wasn’t there again today Oh, how I wish he’d go away. Spooky eh? William Hughes Mearns, was a Harvard Lecturer and Educationalist as well as poet. He apparently wrote this poem to develop and stimulate his students imaginations . Well it certainly stimulated the imagination of this eight-year-old boy ! It intrigued me at that age ,because of the ghostly implication of its verses, but also the adult who was being “haunted” was denying it, but knowing deep down it was happening! Perhaps it was my first introduction to the paradoxes that many adults experience when they experience something eerie and unexpected ,that they cannot believe it , because to admit to it would be considered childish and basically deranged! I was not mediumistic (well as far as I can recall) at all at that age. In fact I did not become involved in spiritualism/mysticism until I was in my forties so my liking for the poem until then was based purely on the quirky and paradoxical tone of belief and disbelief of the haunted victim in the poem. Hughes Mearns apparently was inspired by the reports of a haunting in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. However , since I have become a medium , I feel it that it perhaps unwittingly illustrates the average modern human attitude to mysticism and spirituality. Many people in the modern age like to superficially dismiss the supernatural as a primitive superstition or a religious relic on one level, but on another level they “know” there may be another dimension to human existence. They occasionally come across situations or experiences in life which cannot be explained in the context of the physical world and only can be explained in a supernatural way. Yet what stops them from accepting it , is the modern “logic” that says it did not happen ,even though all their senses said it did! Mystical or mediumistic people have no trouble to “know” there is a supernatural dimension as we have regular contact with it either directly ourselves either personally , or by a mediumistic colleague. If we come across a random supernatural experience or visatation we accept it as part of the pathway of life. Yet to the non-mystical, whether they be total skeptics or conventional religious believers , such an experience can be profoundly disturbing. To the skeptic it is an unwelcome hallucination or even a sign of mental illness! Or even worse that they may have to admit they have been wrong about the supernatural! Such an experience for the conventionally religious however, may bring on a feeling of total dread or guilt . They often feel they have breached a basic tenet or dogma of their religion even if they did not request or provoke the experience and they are in danger of “divine judgement” or worse. Yet direct spiritual experience is at the heart of the foundation of all the major religions, so proof of the actual spiritual dimension should be welcomed ,even if it is initially alarming. Their problem is apart endless warnings in various religious texts against “evil spirits,” in secular sources “the Other Side” has been vilified in countless works of fiction in books, movies, TV etc. Supernatural encounters are overwhelmingly depicted as a sinister and harmful experience, just for entertainment purposes. The phrase “Horror Movie” sums up the main entertainment industry depictions of the supernatural. Nonetheless, there is no tangible evidence that anybody has ever been killed or physically harmed by a “ghostly” encounter. Alarming though such an experience may be, the trauma seems to be of shock of something totally unexpected, not of any physical damage. . Some experienced mediums and mystics may say that a ghostly apparition that is attached to a particular building or area that appears randomly ,with no message or purpose for the shocked recipient , are different from the departed friends and relatives we communicate with for their loved ones . These spirits bring messages and have a true purpose to communicate with those who they left behind. In fact some mediums are skeptical that such hauntings are from the true spiritual dimension . Whatever they are, they do seem to bring a sense of awe and wonder to people who see them. Those people who have had such an encounter I have met ,who were not aware that I am a medium, genuinely seem to value the experience ,even if it was disturbing at the time. Meeting a man(or woman!) who was not “there” , but realising they were “there,” appears to be transformative to that person’s life on various levels, so it should not be sneered at by those of us who have regular “genuine” spiritual encounters . Those of us who are practised mystics are very lucky to meet men and women who are not” there” ,in the view of most of the population! We know that it is not a frightening experience and enriches our lives with the definite knowledge there is an afterlife and our loved ones who departed this physical life are “somewhere” and are not lost to us. The proof and knowledge that is supplied by a medium to us is beyond coincidence and trickery, just as when we are delivering a similar message to another enquirer we know it is coming directly from a spiritual source where love and concern for those still in this life never diminishes. So next time you meet a person who is not” there” , be glad they are “there” and hope they and others do not “go away” as it is a great privilege to be in contact with them. ©Stephen William International Copyright.
