US PRESIDENTS AND OTHER WORLD LEADERS WHO HAVE USED MYSTICS.
By Stephen William, author of: ”Nostradamus His Prophecy Finally Explained.” Available on Amazon Kindle now. Even the most Mystically minded people in knowledge and practice must wonder sometimes why those at the pinnacle of our societies seem to have a barrier in their understanding concerning the transcendental part of existence . Even those who openly practice conventional religions do not expect to actually experience a direct spiritual contact. In fact, they in many cases appear to actually not practice even the teachings of their religions away from their places of worship! This to me indicates that they perhaps doubt the actual presence of a spiritual dimension to existence. However various high profile respected people throughout the modern era have consulted mediums, psychics, mystics etc. and continue to do so. Mediums and other mystical practitioners by common practice , are discreet and confidential about all their clients and especially their well- known clients. They are only too well aware that it could ,be seen as an eccentricity in some careers, for somebody to be known to be consulting with them. Especially politicians! NETTIE COLBURN MAYNARD WROTE A BOOK WHICH DETAILED HER READINGS FOR PRESIDENT AND MRS LINCOLN. President Abraham Lincoln and his wife were known to consult spiritual mediums . This came about early in the American Civil War when unfortunately their third son Willie died age 11 of Typhoid Fever. Even in the pre-antibiotic world of 1860s this early death had a shocking and devastating effect on Abraham Lincoln and his wife. Grief stricken ;Mary Lincoln sought to contact her deceased son via spiritualist mediums. Mary Lincoln contacted various spiritual mediums and appears to have had success with gaining proof of a spiritual dimension to existence. However, there was one medium who appears to have a profound effect on both the President and Mary Lincoln. NETTIE COLBURN. A SPIRITUAL MEDIUM CONSULTED BY THE LINCOLNS Nettie Colburn (the Maynard in the picture was added after her she was married) was an active spiritual medium who was visiting Washington in 1862 visiting her brother in the Federal Army Hospital. Whilst she was in Washington , she was introduced to Mary Lincoln. After speaking to Mrs Lincoln ,the President’s wife was very impressed and suggested a meeting with the President himself in the White House . A carriage was sent for her to attend this meeting apparently. Of course, we mainly only have Nettie Colburn’s own account of this meeting and any others , it does not seem to be officially recorded, as it was a personal matter. Yet it seems to have had a dramatic effect on the President in particular. Nettie made the claim that her spiritual contact influenced Lincoln’s determination to abolish slavery. The war had not been going well for the North in the early part of the Civil War and some in the North were concerned that the forthcoming “ Emancipation Proclamation” would deter amongst other matters, the South to listen to peace proposals and therefore divide the United States forever. Apparently, Nettie Colburn in a state of trance stated to President Lincoln, “ not to abort the terms of its issue and not to delay its enforcement as a law beyond the opening of the year. “ He was assured that it was to be the crowning event of his administration and his life. Obviously as mentioned we mainly must rely on Nettie’s account of this. However, Lincoln was under pressure on this issue and such otherworldly support may well have stiffened the great man’s resolve. The Lincolns also had consultations with other mediums during the Civil War period, such as Charles Colchester , Charles Foster, Fayette Hall as well as Nettie Colburn. Some people would wonder why President Lincoln would take inspiration from a medium such as Colburn? Well ,the policy was a great moral leap forward for the USA which had only been existence for less than a hundred years. However ,the old colonial empires who founded some of the states which made up the new country had overtaken the new “free country” on this issue. France for example who had founded the state of Louisiana , had banned slavery on mainland France in 1815 and then banned it in their colonies in 1848. The British who had been rebelled against and defeated in in 1770s in the original 13 states of the Union, had been even more progressive. They banned slavery in the British Isles in 1807 and their colonies in 1838 . Apart from the sheer cruelty and inhuman suffering caused by slavery, it was making the United States appear to be morally backward in the developed nations of the world . The short term “pragmatism” of delaying such a move to try to “re-unify” the United States would not sit well on the conscience of a great man like Lincoln. So perhaps this apparent message did help him in his insistence in carrying this great anti-slavery act through. He may have even been told by a futuristic prediction, that such a move was crucial to enabling the USA to become the most influential nation in the world and the guarantor of freedom worldwide. Though the Lincolns had great interest in mediums , which had been known and reported at the time, some cynics say that the Nettie Colburn and the other mediums I have mentioned have been discredited as frauds. We as modern mystics are aware that some mediums of the 1800s and early 1900s were frauds , but that does not mean they all were! Surely a man such as President Lincoln ,famous for his judgment and intelligence would have been wary of trickery? Many of the skeptics of mediums both historic and modern do not accept any spirituality as existing. However, we as modern mystics have the advantage over them, as we experience direct spiritual contact and can demonstrate it to others with open minds. Colburn has been criticized by appearing to make money out of her connection with the Lincoln family, Yet this is not proof of fraud or lack of mediumistic ability. Conventional ministers of religion often delight in being connected to a famous politician or any famous public figure. However, they make their living out of giving spiritual comfort and advice which is sometimes enhanced by their famous connection. Does that automatically make them imposters ? Colburn published a book about her experiences with the Presidential family in 1891. Pictured above. Nettie obviously made money from such activities as conventional ministers of religion do, but she was obviously a committed Spiritualist. Why in a free society should she not try to further a cause which had been such a big part of her life ? Some skeptics might also say if the President was receiving advice from the “other side” why did he attend the theatrical performance which led to his cruel and tragic assassination? Lincoln was a brave and principled man who was given proof of the afterlife. He would die sometime. Such a man would not have lived his life in fear of the inevitable. Woodrow Wilson the American President who is famous for being the President during World War One often used to consult psychics and mediums. However , he apparently denied ever using them for policy making ,but to find out whether he was likely to be assassinated ! Obviously this was a genuine fear for a US President (re Lincoln) so he cannot be blamed for this concern. One of his successors, Warren Harding ,apparently also used psychic advisors on the advice of his wife ,but extent he used them for his decision making is unclear. However, President Franklin Roosevelt after the surprise Japanese attack in 1941 on Pearl Harbor, was known to consult psychics /mediums. Apparently he did not want to be caught unprepared again. One very interesting fact about this time was that Roosevelt’s Vice President from 1941 – early 1945 Henry Wallace, was a self-confessed mystic! He also had a strong interest in Buddhism and Zoroastrianism. Perhaps it was his advice that convinced President Roosevelt to consult psychics? Although Wallace was considered a very able Vice President ,he was nicknamed “ the Assistant President “ he was dropped by the Democrats for the 1944 election, as they feared his well- known “unconventional” beliefs may cost them the election. This was despite he was an active member of the conventional Escopalian Church ,part of the Anglican Communion, as other US Presidents and Vice Presidents before him. Harry Truman succeeded him as Vice-President and of course became President on the tragic death of President Roosevelt. Which poses the question ,would have a mystical President Wallace used the atomic bomb? We will never know. One of the mystics that President Roosevelt is reported to have consulted was Jeane Dixon in 1944,one of the USA’s best-known psychics of the time. By Dixon’s own account she said that predicted to the President that Germany would surrender in mid--1945. Unfortunately Roosevelt who suffered from polio for many years passed away in April 1945, so did not live to see the victory in Europe which occurred when Germany surrendered in May 1945. Jeane Dixon was also consulted by another American President, Richard Nixon in the 1960s. Although some skeptics accused her of just “lucky guessing” and some of her public predictions did not come to pass, she obviously was accurate enough for a second President to seek her advice. It is famously known that President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy consulted an astrologer named Joan Quigley during his time as President. Nancy Reagan apparently first contacted Joan Quigley after the fortunately unsuccessful assassination attempt on the President in 1981. She was worried there may be another such attempt. However both her and the President denied that their consultations were about state matters only personal ones . However , the President’s Chief of Staff ,Donald Regan stated in his autobiography. “Virtually every major move and decision the Reagans made during my time as White House Chief of Staff was cleared in advance with a woman in San Francisco [Quigley] who drew up horoscopes to make certain that the planets were in a favourable alignment for the enterprise. “ Make of that what you will, but Reagan was a two term President, so obviously he was not receiving defective advice. They were some of the American leaders who sort mystical advice, but other world leaders in the 20th century did also. One of them was President Mitterrand of France in the 1980s and 1990s. According to the well- known French astrologer Elizabeth Teissier he used her for her advice regularly. But most astonishingly even the best time to involve France in a war! In January 1991 the Gulf War had started after Iraq under Saddam Hussein had invaded neighbouring Kuwait to seize their huge oilfields. The Americans and the British had already demanded that Iraq withdraw or they would attack them until they withdrew. .France was under pressure to join in to protect the West’s oil supplies. According to Elizabeth Teissier, President Mitterrand pestered her for advice for the best time to announce the decision to involve France in the action. He rang her in the first few days of January 1991 and after she “looked at the sky” and said the 7th of January would be the best time to announce France’s entry into the war . On the 7th of January on evening TV ,he did just that to the French people! Elizabeth Tessier claimed Mitterrand consulted her on various occasions during the Gulf War period and advised him on various other occasions during the five- year period of him being President. One of the times she advised him on the best date to hold the Maastricht Treaty Referendum. Four years after his death she released the recorded tapes of some of her consultations with President Mitterrand. PRESIDENT MITTERRAND’S GLASS PYRAMID THAT WAS BUILT IN FRONT OF THE LOUVRE IN PARIS, FRANCE. AS YOU WILL NOTICE IT IS NOT SUITED TO THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE LOUVRE AND CAUSED GREAT CONTROVESY WHEN IT WAS FIRST BUILT.
President Mitterrand was known for his esoteric interests and his connections to various mystical figures and organizations . Apart from consulting with Ms Tessier, he was apparently also very interested in ancient Egyptian spiritual practices and it has been reasonably speculated that he ordered the building of the Glass Pyramid in front of the Louvre (pictured above) because it would bring spiritual energy to the Louvre, which is France’s premier art gallery. Apparently after its construction, Mitterrand would order his driver late at night to drive him to the Glass Pyramid and then would stare at for several minutes in silence, before asking to be taken home. His devotion to it appeared to be beyond normal enthusiasm for a completed public monument. Sir Winston Churchill the great British World War Two Prime Minister, is said to have consulted mystical people and this is borne out by his attempt to stop the prosecution (under 1735 Witchcraft Act) of the then well- known British medium Helen Duncan during that that war . She revealed the sinking of the Royal Navy ship HMS Barham, at an open séance before it had been revealed to the public. He was unsuccessful of course as even Prime Ministers in a free country (thankfully!) cannot interfere with the process of the Law. Still, it does show that he had a strong interest in clairvoyant and predictive matters. It is interesting that as a busy political leader amid conducting a war, he would take time out to concern himself in the prosecution of a spiritual medium who had already previously been caught out using some deception in her practices, before the HMS Barham revelation . I have wondered if this intervention by himself, was because he believed that a person with such an ability of foresight could in fact be of help to the British and Allied war effort? Churchill was known to have mixed with various mystics throughout his long life and surprisingly, had dramatic mystical experiences himself. One surprising fact that came out of my research into his possible spiritual activities ,was that an old school friend of his, claimed Churchill had a future premonition of the World Wars in the forthcoming century and his own significant involvement in them, especially the Second World War. The school friend was called Murland De Grasse Evans and he stated whilst they were at the elite British private school Harrow together, the seventeen-year-old Churchill in 1891 said that he had prophetic dreams about the future and his role in it. He saw great upheavals in the coming century. He mentioned “wars such as one cannot imagine” . Murland De Grasse Evans told this to Randolph Churchill, the son of Winston Churchill, who later wrote Churchill’s official biography. This experience is also documented in other biographies. Evans later in life became the Reverend Evans, a minister in the Church of England, so was unlikely was to have invented this experience. However , another notable mystical event happened to Churchill in his time after his election defeat in 1945. In 1947 he was painting in his home art studio, a favorite hobby of his. According to his own account, he was visited by the spirit of his father who had been dead for over fifty years. Apparently his father’s spirit appeared sitting in a chair in the studio and they had a long discussion about events since his father’s passing. It had such a dramatic effect on him, he apparently described the whole episode to his gathered family at dinner soon after . They were intrigued by his story and one of them suggested he wrote it down and published it for a wider audience. He did just that in the form of a short novel, called “The Dream.” It was by his own admission a fictionalized version of the event , no doubt leaving out some personal details, but he still claimed the visit by his father’s spirit did occur to his family. The “Dream” was not published until 1966 a year after Churchill’s death ,no doubt because of the controversy of a former revered Prime Minister implying he was visited by his long dead father! There is one more predictive event also in Churchill’s long and eventful life to recount though. On the 24th of January 1953 , Winston Churchill by then serving his second term of office as British Prime Minister, remarked to his private secretary that it was the anniversary of his father’s death in 1895. He then added he himself would die on the same date. Twelve years later on the 24th of January 1965 after a lengthy illness he did just that! Did his father bring him that knowledge or was it another prophetic experience of this great visionary man? As mystics we know that a lot of the ”the Other Side” cannot be explained this side of the “veil.” However, we have comfort that there is more to existence than our short physical lives. © Stephen William International Copyright.
