![]() EHow Would Abraham Lincoln Fight Climate Change?
By Stephen William, author of: ”Nostradamus His Prophecy Finally Explained.” Available on Amazon Kindle now. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, is celebrated for his leadership during the American Civil War and the abolition of slavery. Though he lived in a time when climate change was not a recognized issue, examining his principles and actions provides a fascinating lens through which to imagine how he might approach this modern crisis.
As regular readers of Mystic Living Today may recall I wrote an article about Abraham Lincoln and his consulting of spiritual mediums during the American Civil War and his unconventional approach to spiritual matters. Briefly to recap, Lincoln appeared to adhere to no known religion previously to the Civil War , but after the death of his beloved 11-year-old son Willie a few months after the War broke out , his grief-stricken wife and himself began consulting mediums to contact the spirit of their passed son. Foremost amongst the mediums consulted was Nellie Colburn who wrote about her meetings with the Lincoln’s in 1891. ![]() A CONTEMPORY DRAWING OF PRESIDENT LINCOLN WITH NELLIE COLBURN IN A TRANCE. THE LINCOLNS WERE WELL KNOWN IN WASHINGTON AT THAT TIME TO BE CONSULTING MEDIUMS. ![]() THE BOOK WRITTEN BY NELLIE COLBURN MAYNARD (HER THEN MARRIED NAME) ABOUT HER SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES WITH PRESIDENT LINCOLN. Abraham Lincoln and wife also consulted with various other well know mediums of this period, which demonstrates that he was openminded and willing to try unconventional methods to steer himself through the spiritual searches and challenges that all people experience during their life ,such as the death of a loved one. However what made Lincoln such an outstanding leader ,was his ability to apply this open minded and unconventional attitude to dealing with non- mystic and worldly matters. A clear example of this is when the American Civil War started. Lincoln was faced with the cataclysmic possibility of the United States which was still under a hundred-year-old country splitting in two over the question of cruel and barbaric human slavery and other contentious issues . Lincoln as a humane and moral leader could not compromise on the black slavery issue as most people in the Northern States of the Union could not compromise on this issue either. In addition to internal American sentiment , many advanced nations in the world had already banned slavery some years previously. For example, both the Britain and France had banned slavery and America’s continued use of it was affecting American relations with such countries. So war became inevitable. Yet where was the money to fight such a war coming from? The American currency at the time, was based mainly on the Silver Dollar. Such a currency was obviously backed up by a precious metal that could be traded internationally. Lincoln’s government desperately attempted to borrow from the American banking sector, however they were reluctant to back such a risky venture such as a Civil War! Foreign banks also were loath to lend money ,because of the possibility of the North losing and the complications that would occur after the war. However a solution appeared that Lincoln gratefully seized on that with his now legendary open-minded and insightful attitude to important decisions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The solution came from Colonel Edmund Dick Taylor, a businessman who was serving as a volunteer officer. Taylor met with Lincoln in January 1862 and suggested issuing unbacked paper money. On February 25, 1862, Congress passed the first Legal Tender Act, which authorized the issuance of $150 million (~$3.57 billion in 2023) in United States Notes .Since the reverse of the notes was printed with green ink, they were called "greenbacks" by the public and considered to be equivalent to the Demand Notes, which were already known as such. The United States Notes were issued by the United States to pay for labour and goods .As you can sees no bank loans were required. No debt interest incurred either. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The rest is now history and this masterstroke helped the North to win the war and abolish slavery throughout the United States and then helped America attain its elevated position in the world in the future. ![]() UNITED STATES SIVER DOLLAR OF 1860 WHEN THE UNITED STATES CURRENCY WAS FULLY BACKED BY THE PRECIOUS METALS OF SILVER AND GOLD. SUCH COINS HAD AN INTRINSIC VALUE BECAUSE THE METAL THEY WERE MADE FROM COULD BE USED ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. HOWEVER THIS METAL VALUE MADE THEM INFLEXIBLE TO BORROW IN TIMES OF A NATIONAL EMERGENCY TO FINANCE URGENTLY NEEDED PROJECTS. “I have two great enemies, the Southern Army in front of me and the bankers in the rear. Of the two, the one at my rear is my greatest foe.” A QUOTE ATTRIBUTED TO ABRAHAM LINCOLN ON HIS PROBLEM OF RAISNG FINANCE FOR THE CIVIL WAR. ![]() THE UNITED STATES “GREENBACK” DOLLAR FIRST ISSUED DURING THE CIVIL WAR BY THE US TREASURY. THIS WAS BACKED BY THE IDEA THAT THE NORTHERN UNION WAS THE OFFICAL GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND WAS FIGHTING TO ABOLISH SLAVERY AND WERE MOST LIKELY TO WIN THE WAR. Lincoln was a forward-thinking leader who embraced innovation. He established the National Academy of Sciences and signed the Pacific Railway Acts, which encouraged the development of infrastructure and technology. In today's context, Lincoln would likely champion green technology and renewable energy sources. He would support research and development in solar, wind, and other sustainable energy forms, aiming to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate environmental harm. He would probably also suggest a Greenback Dollar type solution or Sovereign Money Creation to give its modern name , to provide the finance for such an enormous undertaking. His almost mystic(?) insight would have compelled him to do so for such an important issue facing mankind. Conventional finance sources (banks very often) often say that the Return On Investment (ROI) is very slow on such projects , however they are always willing to lend billions to fund projects like , new oilfields, casinos ,hotels, real estate etc. which we have a lot of already. Faster ROI obviously ! The future of the climate of the planet to them is not as important as a quick ROI ! Understanding the importance of public opinion and education, Lincoln would likely emphasize the need for widespread awareness about climate change. He would support educational initiatives to inform citizens about the science of climate change and the steps they can take to reduce their carbon footprint. By fostering a well-informed electorate, Lincoln would aim to build a broad-based movement for environmental sustainability. This would also require massive finance without incurring large debt and interest for the taxpayer. The creation of debt free money for this would also be needed. Lincoln's adept use of diplomacy during the Civil War indicates he would be an active participant in global climate negotiations. He would likely work to restore the United States' position as a leader in international climate policy, advocating for ambitious global targets and accountability measures. By engaging with other world leaders, Lincoln would strive to create a united front against the threat of climate change. He would also probably suggest a united approach on the finance needed ,so that countries that feel their taxpayers would baulk at the costs of fighting climate change would also use his alternative form of finance to achieve it. Lincoln's legacy reminds us of that great leadership in times of crisis involves looking forward, embracing innovation, and uniting people towards a common goal. While the specific challenges of climate change are unique to our time, the principles and strategies that guided Lincoln's leadership offer invaluable insights into how we might tackle one of the most pressing issues of our era. Some cynics will say the Greenback Dollar may have worked then ,in that specific situation , but it would not now as we are not facing a war and “printing money always causes mega inflation” .On the issue of mega-inflation, this is deliberate misinformation put out by financial institutions and their paid supporters in news outlets. The British when they entered the First World War after Imperial Germany had invaded neutral Belgium, needed money quickly to recruit and equip a large land army to fight a major land war in Western Europe. They did this by copying Lincoln’s Greenback Dollar plan. The British nicknamed their version the Bradbury Pound. The British Government faced almost identical opposition from British financial institutions including the Bank of England, which was run as a private bank then, as Lincoln did from the financial elite in his time. So the British Treasury just issued its own paper currency to meet its new war expenses. As with the reunited America after the Civil War , after World War One Britain did not suffer mega inflation because of this financial move. ![]() AN EXAMPLE OF THE BRITISH TREASURY ISSUED “BRADBURY POUND” TO HELP PAY FOR THE BRITISH WAR EXPENSES IN WORLD WAR ONE . JOHN BRADBURY WAS THE SENIOR CIVIL SERVANT IN THE BRITISH TREASURY AND HIS SIGNATURE WAS PRINTED ON THESE NOTES . THE BANK OF ENGLAND AND OTHER BRITISH BANKS WERE RELUTANT TO LEND MONEY TO FIGHT THE WAR JUST AS AMERICAN BANKS WERE RELUCTANT TO FINANCE LINCOLN AND THE UNION GOVERNMENT IN THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR. A more modern example of a “Greenback Dollar” solution to a major problem was the International Financial Crisis of 2008 . Money was “created” by Central Banks and Treasuries the world over to keep the world financial system running and ensure that that many of the world’s banks did not fold so therefore causing many businesses to go bankrupt and therefore cause mass unemployment and mass default on loans. This was obviously needed . Yet why is not a similar amount of money being made available to fund non- carbon ways of alleviating and potentially reversing climate change? Vested interests is one of the reasons why. New oilfields and other carbon fuel producing schemes are still being planned and banks are still lending large amounts of money for them to be put into action. Sure there is a fast ROI on such projects, very often more quickly than carbon neutral power generation projects! But at what cost to the future of the planet and the future of human and all other animal life on it. The greed of the perpetrators of such projects has insanely blinded them to the scientifically verified warnings of Climate Change and the danger to themselves and their own children. What is spiritual and moral about supporting such people and projects? True leadership requires moral and enlightened decision making to ensure that the whole of society and the world it lives in, is kind and sustainable. Abraham Lincoln a mystically inclined leader from the recent past has provided us with a blueprint to achieve making improvements to decrease and perhaps eventually start reversing climate change for all people. Perhaps we as mystically inclined people should start promoting his methods to ensure that this becomes a reality? ©Stephen William International Copyright.
