Christmas is often regarded as a time of joy, generosity, and togetherness. For many, it is closely linked to religious traditions and cherished family rituals. However, for Spiritualists, the festive season can hold a unique and profound significance. Here are five compelling reasons why being a Spiritualist at Christmas can enrich your experience of this special time of year.

Spiritualism emphasises kindness, compassion, and selfless giving. At Christmas, these values are mirrored in the tradition of exchanging gifts and acts of charity. Spiritualists are naturally inclined to focus on the intention behind each gesture, understanding that true giving comes from the heart and is not limited to material offerings. This perspective encourages deeper connections and more meaningful expressions of goodwill during the holiday season. Very often because most of your spiritually aware friends and acquaintances are outside your normal family and friendship circle, you can make them feel cheered and comforted when they are lonely because of bereavement or some other loss. 2. HONOURING LOVED ONES BEYOND THE PHYSICAL. The festive period can be bittersweet for those who have lost loved ones. Spiritualists believe in the continuation of the spirit and maintain ongoing bonds with those who have passed on. During Christmas, Spiritualists often feel comforted by the belief that departed friends and family are still present in spirit, allowing them to celebrate together in a different, yet heartfelt, way. This outlook brings solace and an enduring sense of togetherness, even in the absence of physical presence. If you are a medium, sometimes you can bring a message from a departed loved one to someone who still mourns their passing (with their permission of course!). This proof of their continued existence can be the best present they could receive. 3. CULTIVATING PEACE AND MINDFULNESS. The hustle and bustle of Christmas can sometimes overshadow its more reflective aspects. Spiritualists are encouraged to seek inner peace and mindfulness, recognising the importance of quiet contemplation amidst the festivities. This practice can help alleviate stress and create a sanctuary of calm, making it easier to appreciate the joys of the season and foster gratitude for life’s blessings. 4.CELEBRATING UNIVERSAL LOVE AND UNITY. Spiritualism promotes the belief that all people are connected by a universal spirit and that love transcends all boundaries. At Christmas, this worldview inspires Spiritualists to extend kindness and understanding not just to their immediate circle, but to the wider community. By focusing on unity and acceptance, Spiritualists contribute to a more inclusive and harmonious holiday atmosphere, embodying the true message of peace on earth and goodwill towards all. Spiritualists come from all religious backgrounds, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Native American etc. Because of this we are aware that most major world religions have important festivals and feasts during December. Most of the major world religions originated in the Northern Hemisphere and the Solstice that occurs in December is the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. Because of the cold and lack of most crops at this time ,humans naturally drew together in a spirit of oneness and happiness to ward off the darkness and cold around them during the short days of the season. We appreciate that all religions of goodwill have similar basic fundamental truths and we can all be spiritual in our own way. 5.FINDING MEANING BEYOND TRADITION. While Christmas is steeped in tradition, Spiritualists are encouraged to seek their own personal meaning in the celebrations. This might involve reaching out to people of different religions, meditating on spiritual growth in the New Year, or performing acts of service. By approaching the season with openness and intention, Spiritualists can experience Christmas as a time of renewal, inspiration, and deeper connection to the world around them. In summary, being a Spiritualist at Christmas offers a unique opportunity to celebrate the season with a heightened sense of compassion, remembrance, and spiritual awareness. Whether through honouring passed loved ones, practising compassion or spreading kindness, Spiritualism can help transform Christmas into a truly uplifting and meaningful time of year instead of the materialistic time of gluttony it has become to some people. ©Stephen William International Copyright.
