What is the Point of this Life if the Afterlife is so Perfect?

AT VARIOUS TIMES IN MANY PEOPLE’S LIVES , THE LIFE SITUATION AROUND THEM, MAKES THEM FEEL LIKE THE PERSON IN THE PAINTING.  In the April issue of this magazine, I wrote an article entitled “What is the Point of the Afterlife.” Last month after it had been published, I wondered if I should tackle  the opposing question, what is the point of this life if the Afterlife is much more peaceful? People who are going through a tough time or who have had a disadvantaged and unenjoyable life often ask mystics and mediums this question, sometimes expecting a definitive answer from us on this huge subject! I will give you my take on this difficult question ,which may be of help if you if you are confronted with a similar question.    Firstly, even the most experienced mystic or medium does not know exactly what the Afterlife is like. We are only given a glimpse or hint of it  by our spiritual contact with the departed.   We can demonstrate it is there  but are not given are full detail of it. Whilst  the afterlife is often imagined as a realm of perfect peace, earthly life offers distinct, irreplaceable value. Philosophers, theologians, and spiritual traditions suggest that physical existence serves as a unique "school" or canvas that a purely spiritual existence cannot replicate.   Here are the primary reasons why physical life holds profound purpose:   The Canvas for Action and Creation: Physicality allows you to turn abstract thoughts into tangible realities. You can build, create art, shape environments, and directly manifest your intentions in a way that requires density and time.   Experiencing Contrast: In a realm of pure peace, it is difficult to fully appreciate joy, warmth, or relief without having experienced sadness, cold, or struggle. Physical life provides the necessary contrast to deeply feel and value positive experiences. For example, you cannot be physically  brave in a plane of existence where we believe there is no danger or ain or death!   Catalyst for Moral and Spiritual Growth: Overcoming challenges, practicing patience, showing compassion, and making difficult moral choices require a physical environment. These experiences act as a forge for developing virtues and evolving your consciousness.   Relational Depth: Physical embodiment allows for shared human experiences. The acts of hugging, laughing together, raising families, and building communities create a depth of connection rooted in our shared vulnerability and temporality.   The Joy of Simple Senses: The Afterlife is often described as purely mental or spiritual. Physical life allows you to experience the rich, sensory beauty of the universe, tasting your favourite food, feeling the warmth of the sun, or listening to music.   Ultimately, physical life is viewed not as a lesser state to be escaped, but as a dynamic, immersive experience which exists for growth, contribution, and the sheer, tangible experience of being.   The other reason that a physical life is needed, is to populate the Afterlife! Although we have contact sometimes with beings that may not have had an earthly existence , the vast majority of the contact we have is with departed people. They would not be in the Afterlife if they had not lived and developed in a physical life! One of the great pleasures of life for many people as mentioned above, is parenthood. Caring for and loving my children and later on my grandchildren has been an almost indescribable pleasure. Even people who have not had children themselves often have nephews and nieces or friends’ children which bring a loving dimension to their life ,which is unlike any other sensation that they experience in this existence. As there appears to be no reproduction in the Afterlife, this is another good reason for this lifetime.   After having painted such a positive picture for this current life , how does this help or inspire those as mentioned above, who have had a disadvantaged life devoid of happiness? Well perhaps a four- letter word may help! Hope! This life can be desperately unfair for some people. Very often they have not done anything to deserve such an existence or even if they have in some way, the suffering they endure often outweighs their contribution to their plight. The feeling that this existence and the release of death will mean just a void with nothing worthwhile achieved , is replaced in the evidence of an Afterlife. Also by Hope, that they will find answers to the suffering they have  endured and reunification with forebears that will give them the love and comfort that they feel they have missed out on, on this earthly plane.   Hope is one of the intangible feelings that humans experience when they are going through difficult times. You cannot write an equation to explain it, but we all know it exists. A bit like spirituality itself to us mystics. Therefore Hope is what links this life with the Afterlife. Both need each other , just as humans need a spiritual life as well as a physical one for a complete life.    ©Stephen William International Copyright.
