The title above is a question sometimes asked by non-spiritualists. Even though they do not often admit it, the concept of direct spiritual contact fascinates many non-spiritualists, be they religious or non-religious. However what sometimes confuses them , why are we not all mediums if direct spiritual contact is such a reality? This is sometimes cited as reason to be skeptical of spiritualism.
Most spiritualists are not mediums because Spiritualism is a broad spiritual philosophy focused on personal moral growth and the survival of the human soul, whereas mediumship is viewed as a specific, specialized mystic skill. Just as all members of a conventional church do not become priests or choir leaders, everyday spiritualists participate in their religion through study, prayer, meditation and philosophy rather than acting as communication channels.
Spiritual Fellowship vs. Specialized Skill
- Broad Participation: Spiritualism welcomes anyone who believes in continuing life and personal responsibility, meaning most adherents are general members of the congregation.
- Specialized Practice: Acting as a bridge to the spirit world requires distinct perceptual gifts, such as clairvoyance or clairaudience, which are considered specialized talents rather than universal traits.
Focus and Worship
- Philosophy and Healing: Regular spiritualists very often focus on self-improvement, spiritual healing, and philosophy rather than conducting active communication sessions with the deceased.
- Supportive Roles: Most community members support the church, attend worship services, and listen to messages rather than standing at the front to deliver them.
At the heart of the different roles in Spiritualism is the factor that Spiritualism is much more a communal activity than other spiritual systems. If a medium was giving messages from the deceased to other people that could not be recognised by the listeners , it could be quite rightly said that they were just imagining spiritual contact. The fact that people in the audience/congregation do recognise the spirits is proof of contact to the medium just as much as to the person who can take the message . Obviously this is much more intense in a private one to one reading . This form of interaction demonstrates the equal importance of both the medium and the non-medium.
Of course, many spiritual churches and individual mediums who practice alone do offer development circles to develop people to become spiritual mediums. Some of the people drawn to these have had spiritual experiences all their lives, whilst others have not had previous direct spiritual experiences, yet feel a compulsion to further their spiritual knowledge. Not all of them become “practicing” mediums, but most do get personal spiritual contact, which is great satisfaction to themselves and furthers their spiritual knowledge and further confirms their proof of the Afterlife.

THE CHELMSFORD SPIRITUALIST SOCIETY IN CHELMSFORD ENGLAND , WHERE I REGULARLY ATTEND . IT OFFERS SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES FOR BUDDING MEDIUMS, AS WELL AS CLAIRVOYANCE SERVICES.
Of course, fulltime professional spiritual mediums need clients to make a living and spiritual churches do not run themselves! These activities are very often undertaken by committed non-medium spiritualists. Although Spiritualism conveys the message we are all spiritual beings ,we all live and have roles in this physical world before we pass on to the next one. People who are not actively involved in contacting the spiritual realm themselves are ideal for these needed tasks. This involvement by them is vital for the Spiritualist movement.
One of the ways most Spiritualist churches in my country England, ensure proof of spiritual contact is by having regular guest mediums. Although there are some regular working mediums who are regular members of the church, mostly often a guest medium is asked to demonstrate on platform, clairvoyance and clairaudience at a service . This is mainly to prevent the suggestion that as most of the people attending are known to them and their personal and family history are known to them also, fake or guessed at messages can be given. However a church’s own professional mediums often travel to other churches to demonstrate clairvoyance and clairaudience. This also helps maintain spiritualist audiences and the general public maintain faith in the quality of spiritual messages given.
So you can see everybody can be a spiritualist , they do not have to be a medium, just aware of the reality of the Afterlife and the certainty of a spiritual dimension to existence. The whole point of Spiritualism.
