A deep and historic link connects symbolism and mysticism, as symbols serve as the primary language through which mystical experiences are expressed, taught, and preserved. To some people new to mysticism this can be beautiful and wonderous. Yet to others it can be confusing and sometimes hard to understand. They see it as frustrating, as the message does not seem to be conveyed in a straightforward manner and therefore can be misunderstood. From my point of though, receiving messages in a symbolic form is part of the spiritual and mystical journey you have chosen to undertake. This is because it requires your own intellect and mystical understanding to translate the vision into a tangible message from the spiritual dimension.By Stephen William. The Core Connection
- The Inexpressible Truth: Mysticism involves a direct, personal experience of the divine, ultimate reality, or higher consciousness that transcends ordinary human language and logical thought.
- The Bridge of Symbols: Because mystical truths cannot be captured by literal definitions, mystics rely on metaphors, allegories, and physical symbols (such as light, darkness, sacred geometry, traditional spiritual images etc.) to point toward a greater reality and inspiration.
- The Vehicle of Transformation: In traditions like Kabbalah, Sufism, and Christian mysticism, symbols are not just decorative; they act as spiritual tools or keys designed to awaken higher awareness and facilitate an inner shift in the seeker.
Key Symbols
- Sacred Architecture and Art: Mandalas, yantras, labyrinths, and cathedral windows use geometric shapes and imagery to map out the cosmos and guide the mind into deep meditation.
- Esoteric Traditions: Schools of thought like Western Hermeticism, Alchemy, and Tarot use rich visual symbol sets to represent stages of spiritual evolution and psychological rebirth.
- The Literary Movement: For example in late 19th-century literature (the Symbolist movement), writers like Arthur Symons viewed symbolism as a form of secular mysticism, a way to hint at the mysterious, hidden darkness of the human condition rather than spelling things out with rigid logic.

AS YOU CAN SEE THE REVERSE OF THE US DOLLAR BILL ON THE LEFT- HAND SIDE,HAS THE ANCIENT SPIRITUAL SYMBOLS OF “THE EYE OF PROVIDENCE “ OR THE “EYE OF GOD “ AND A “ PYRAMID” ON IT . THE UNFINISHED PYRAMID HAS 13 ROWS OF BRICKS INDICATING THE ORIGINAL STATES OF THE UNION. THE UNION HAS NOW GROWN TO 50 STATES. THIS SYMBOLIC MESSAGE APPEARS TO CONVEY THE EXISTENCE AND GROWTH OF THE UNITED STATES WITH DIVINE APPROVAL. THIS DEMONSTRATES THE IMPORTANCE OF SYMBOLISM.
Core Spiritual Meanings of a Pyramid
- Spiritual Ascension: The wide, stable base represents the physical body and earthly grounding, while the rising sides and sharp apex symbolize the soul's climb toward enlightenment, truth, and higher awareness.
- Integration of Self and Soul: The base stands for human existence, the sides reflect spiritual effort, and the single top point represents the harmonious union of the human self with the divine or higher consciousness.
Various other universal symbols obviously exist ,such as various crosses, various star shapes both five pointed and six pointed, which convey different meanings to different people. Also animal symbolism exists in many cultures, common examples of this are the “wise” owl, the “courageous” lion, the “stupid” donkey, the “wily” fox or coyote, the dove of “peace” etc.etc. These symbolic creatures often appear in spiritual readings or meditations and it is up to the recipient to decipher the meaning which is being given to them. This to me signifies that you are being given mystical advice or guidance, but it is up to you figure out how to decide or act on the information. Obviously different animals in different cultures and eras have different meanings, but as the symbolism is being imparted to you in the here and now, you may instinctively know what is meant. For example, the owl in Medieval Western Europe often symbolized evil or death yet has now evolved in the modern western world as a symbol of wisdom as it was previously in Ancient Greece. However if you are from a different culture, you must take it’s symbolism as you understand it.
I had a rather brutal introduction into the power of symbolism, many years ago when I sat in in my first spiritual development circle. One of the members who was a lot more experienced in spiritual contact than I was, gave me a reading in which she clearly described my deceased Uncle Bill. The physical description clearly described him and she said at the end of it, his name was Bill!
However he came with no spoken message ,she suddenly said he was surrounded by a flock of birds flying around him. That made no sense at all to me, except he did live at the edge of a forest ,where their obviously lived a lot of birds. However then she said a taller slimmer younger man was standing next to him wearing a uniform. That then made sense because my cousin Leigh ,his son was a pilot in the Royal Air Force (RAF). I believed the birds symbolized Leigh’s flying career. Yet my medium colleague looked sad when I said that and she said nothing else.
Several days later I had an important business meeting and set off early in my car as it was nearly a 100 miles away. On the car radio there was a news report that a RAF pilot had crashed in a plane with another NATO pilot from another country. They had taken off from the airbase where my cousin was based. I immediately tried to hope that it was another RAF pilot ,not my cousin as I had to concentrate on driving and the meeting ahead. Obviously, it would have been tragic if it were someone else’s relative ,but Leigh and I had been close as children. The meeting went well and I had other business to deal with in the area and I deliberately did not listen to the radio for the rest of the day.
When I got home in late afternoon, and got out of my car , my eldest daughter opened our front door and said, “Dad, something terrible has happened in your family.” I said, “Is it my cousin Leigh?” She was astonished, but I explained what I heard on the radio. I very soon found out that he and the other pilot were flying fast at only 500 feet above the ground when they flew into a flock of birds which were sucked into the engine air inlet and caused the plane to crash. Both of them ejected but as they were so low to the ground their parachutes were unable to open and they were killed. It was of course very sad for my family and his mother my aunt who has already lost her husband ,my Uncle Bill. However my belief in the Afterlife and the symbolic prediction of what was to happen helped me come to terms with the tragedy. Leigh contacted me via another medium about a year later and was happy, so that was a comfort as well.
So a symbolic prediction revealed what was to happen without distressing me before the event. It also gave me proof of my Uncle Bill’s Afterlife survival and that he would be there to be reunited with his son Leigh. Symbolism was therefore a more useful form of communication than words in that instance. It has a great part to play not only in mysticism , but also in everyday physical life, as the dollar bill example demonstrates. Therefore if symbolic messages come to you either in meditation or via a medium, explore them and find out via mystical colleagues or by reading what their symbolism could mean.
Sometimes Symbolism is more potent than the spoken or written word. It also has a tangible link to our mystical practice.
